I work on various normative challenges raised by global climate change including what policies of mitigation and adaptation we should adopt in order to protect vulnerable populations from harm. I also work on the question of what to do about, and who should bear the costs of, adverse climate impacts that cannot be prevented by mitigation and adaptation. More broadly, I work on the ethics of distribution and, in particular, questions of unjust enrichment and justice between generations.

Kerem Öge’s research examines how sharing information about carbon emissions, known as carbon disclosure, has become a dominant norm in combating climate change. With his co-author Federico Chaves-Correa (Université Laval), he utilizes discourse network analysis to investigate the evolution of carbon disclosure frames over the past two decades. The network analysis highlights marketization and privatization as key initial drivers of carbon disclosure and illustrates a process of increasing institutionalization, especially since the Paris Treaty.

My research focuses predominantly on the delivery of climate policies and the contested politics surrounding this. I have published articles on key aspects of environmental politics in Britain and Europe, including on green parties, political parties’ approaches to climate change, and voters’ attitudes to the issue. My PhD focused on the history of the environmental movement in Britain, and in 2021 I was awarded a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship to study the UK government’s approach to climate change policy.

I have been researching the politics of climate change mitigation since 2007 – with some emphasis on the energy sector where I lecture, research, and publish on the politics of sustainable energy transformations at the regional (EU), national (UK and Germany), and local levels. I am a Co-Director of the UK Energy Research Centre and of the ESRC Energy, Policy, Politics, and Governance research network. I am currently involved in creating an innovative, new Masters Programme in the Politics of Climate Change launching in September 2024. Prior to my academic career, I worked as an investment banker.

Louis' work focuses on the global political economy of the transition to net zero. He is especially interested in the history and future of 'energy security'. He was previously Research Director of a small climate finance think tank, where he wrote about the flaws of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero, and private finance schemes to buy out and retire coal plants in the global South.

I am interested in environmental politics at large, including related ideology, sociology, public controversies, public policies, parties and elections, with a particular interest in nuclear energy, shale gas, air pollution, cars, and advertising. I studied the policy and public debates around French nuclear energy from 1970-2000, with a particular focus on how the issue came on and off the public agenda. I also work on postapocalyptic fiction, whether resulting from climate breakdown or other hazards, looking at how such fiction reveals, nurtures or alleviates environmental concerns, and how postapocalyptic survivors attempt to reimagine and rebuild politics.

I am a Research Fellow in the geopolitics of sustainable energy transitions. Currently, I focus on critical energy geopolitics, international diplomacy (particularly on critical minerals), and energy security (especially addressing UK, Australia, Latin America, and China’s influence). Having worked alongside materials scientists and low-carbon technology developers, I have a strong focus on low-carbon/renewable energy technologies. Former work, and my current teaching, also analyses business, corporate social responsibility, supply chains, business in high-risk/conflict prone areas, peacebuilding, circular economy, and sustainability/degrowth.

Dr Madeleine Fagan’s research focuses on the Anthropocene, ecological security, political mobilization around the environment, and the ethics and politics of the nonhuman. Her current research addresses political mobilization around climate change: what drives mobilization; the impacts of how the Anthropocene is communicated; the role of the nonhuman in concepts of political community; and the possibilities of ethical attachment to the nonhuman.

Keith’s recent research on climate change looks at how climate impacts are experienced by vulnerable groups, particularly in the Global South, and how policymakers can incorporate considerations of justice and ethics into climate policy and planning. Across a number of funded projects he has worked closely with climate policy and advocacy partners including the City of Cape Town government, Slum Dwellers International and youth affiliates in 8 cities in sub-Saharan Africa, the UN FAO and a network of Indigenous communities in 13 countries (more details at https://www.ethicsindevelopment.org/Link opens in a new window). Keith has also worked on the ethics of carbon offsetting and is currently looking at how democratic innovations can facilitate long-term inclusive policymaking in response to climate change and other global challenges.

Ben Clift has published widely at the interface of comparative and international political economy, exploring the politics of economic ideas and expertise. His current research focuses on how expert economic bodies such as the IPCC, Office for Budget Responsibility, the IMF and the Climate Change Committee broach and gauge climate change. His research agenda evaluates their policy advocacy in relation to the ecological crisis of capitalism. His animating intellectual focus questions how far the heavy expert reliance market-based ‘solutions’, technical ‘fixes’ such as negative emissions technologies, and ‘business as usual’ assumptions about economic growth and energy usage undermines their efficiency in charting a path to a sustainable future for capitalism.
