A research project in the PAIS department, funded by the European Research Council, has produced a documentary film about the impact of Prevent referrals on individuals and their families. The film, 'Due Regard', will be screened at 3pm on Tuesday 5th March at Lecture Theatre 2, Hicks Building, University of Sheffield, Broomhall, Sheffield, S3 7RH. The 40-minute documentary explores the stories of four families about whom Prevent referrals (concerning vulnerability to radicalisation) were made - by teachers, social workers, and police. Individuals often struggle to obtain information on why they have been referred, and by whom, leading to long battles with local authorities for relevant perwork. This secrecy, alongside the racist and ableist stigmatisation that characterise most of the featured referrals, leaves deep wounds on those inappropriately referred.
After the screening, there will be a short discussion panel - allowing the audience to ask questions of the filmmaker (Dr Shahnaz Akhter), and our collaborating partners, Preventwatch (an organisation who provide support to all people referred to Prevent). Please come along! Attendance is free of charge. Please register on the link above.
