V5L2 Philosophy and Politics
First Year
In your first year, you must take a set of compulsory core modules. The core first-year modules are:
- PO107 Introduction to Politics (Full Year, 30 credits)

PH133 Introduction to Philosophy (Full Year, 30 credits)
Students should then select optional modules totalling 60 credits. Of these, students must select:
- At least 15 credits of first year Philosophy modules
- At least 15 credits of first year PAIS (Politics and International Studies) modules
- The remaining 30 credits can also be taken from Philosophy and/or PAIS departments. Students may instead choose to take modules totalling up to 30 credits from another department.*
In order to proceed into the second year of study, students must pass both core modules and at least one additional module of at least 15 credits from each Philosophy and PAIS (totalling 90 credits).
Students should check the relevant module pages or contact paisug@warwick.ac.uk for further details for PAIS modules.
Second Year
In your second year you must take the following core modules:
- PO2E3 Foundations of Political Theory (15 credits)
- PO2E2 Topics in Political Theory (15 credits)
You must then select either:
- PH201 History of Modern Philosophy (30 credits)
OR
- PH211 Ethics (15 credits) AND PH212 Applied Ethics (15 credits)
You should then select optional honours-level modules totalling 60 credits, of which a minimum of 30 credits must be from the Philosophy and/or PAIS departments. Students may choose to take modules totalling up to 30 CATS from another department.*
Final Year
In the final year there are no core modules. Students should select optional honours-level modules totalling 120 credits distributed in the following way:
- At least 30 credits of honours-level Philosophy modules
- At least 30 credits of third year PAIS modules
- In addition to the above a further 30 credits of honours-level Philosophy and/or PAIS modules
- The remaining 30 credits can also be taken from Philosophy and/or PAIS departments. Students may instead choose to take modules totalling up to 30 credits from another department.*
In their final year, students also may wish to consider taking the following modules, but this is not required:
- PH313 Philosophy Dissertation (30 credits)
- PO366 PAIS Dissertation (30 credits)
- PH353 Philosophy Independent Project (15 credits)
*Permission to take modules outside of the Philosophy Department must be sought from the Department offering the module before you register for it on eVision. Details of how and when to sign-up for external modules can usually be found on that Department's website. If in doubt please contact the Department's Undergraduate Office who will be able to advise you of their sign-up processes.
