VL78 Philosophy with Psychology

Please note that due to a curriculum change, the course specifications differ for students commencing their course on or before 2022-23 academic year and those commencing their course in 2023-24 or later. Please ensure you refer to the correct regulations for you:

VL78 Philosophy with Psychology Course Specifications for students commencing their studies in 2023-24 or later

This degree course is not a joint degree, but a variant of Philosophy. For details of modules in Psychology you should consult the modules available in the Department of Psychology. Each module is examined under the conventions of the department offering the module.

In each year of study, students are required to take exactly 120 CATS of modules. The specific requirements for each year of study are set out below.

First Year:

Students taking Philosophy with Psychology (VL78) will be required to take the following 15-CAT core required Philosophy modules in their first year:
PH144 Mind and Reality (Autumn Term)
PH145 Plato and Descartes (Autumn Term)
PH136 Logic 1: Introduction to Symbolic Logic (Spring Term)
PH149 Key Debates in Moral and Political Philosophy (Spring Term)

Students are also required to select at least two of the following 15-CAT optional core required Psychology modules:
PS121 Brain and Behaviour (Autumn Term)
PS120 Neuropsychology and Psychopathology (Spring Term) - students wishing to take this module must have taken A-Level (or equivalent) Biology.
PS122 Psychology in Context (Spring Term)

Students in their first year of study are required to pass all core required and optional core required modules in order to meet the criteria to progress into the second year of study. Where students have opted to take all three Psychology optional core required modules, students must pass at least two of those modules individually to proceed into year 2.

Students should then select optional modules comprising 30 CATS (or 15 CATS if you have opted to take all 3 optional core Psychology modules). Some common choices from the Philosophy and Psychology departments are listed below. However, you may select modules from other departments if you wish.*
PH107 Problems in Philosophy and Literature(15 CATS, Autumn Term)
PH146 Reason, Argument and Analysis (15 CATS, Autumn Term)
PH148 Philosophy for the Real World: Knowledge, Ignorance and Bullshit (15 CATS, Autumn Term)
PH140 Ancient Philosophy(15 CATS, Spring Term)
PH143 Existence, Experience, History: Key Topics in Continental Philosophy(15 CATS, Spring Term)
PH150 World Philosophies (15 CATS, Spring Term)

Second Year:

Students taking Philosophy with Psychology (VL78) will be required to take the following core modules in their second year:
PH201 History of Modern Philosophy (Full Year) - 30 CATS
PS210 Language and Cognition (Autumn Term) - 15 CATS
PS218 Developmental Psychology (Spring Term) - 15 CATS

You should then select optional honours-level modules totalling 60 CATS. You should choose at least 30 CATS from the Philosophy department; options can be viewed here. Students may also choose to take modules totalling up to 30 CATS from another department.*

Final Year:

In the final year, there are no core modules. Students should select optional modules totalling 120 CATS. At least 60 CATS should come from the Philosophy department and a minimum of 30 CATS should come from the Psychology Department. The remaining 30 CATS may come from either department or another department in the University if you wish.*

Students may choose to take the PH313 Dissertation or PH353 Independent Project module in the final year, but this not required.

*Permission to take modules outside of the Philosophy Department must be sought from the Department offering the module before you register for it on eVision. Details of how and when to sign up for external modules can usually be found on that Department's website. If in doubt please contact the Department's Undergraduate Office who will be able to advise you of their sign up processes.

Students on the Philosophy with Psychology with Intercalated Year (VL79) or Philosophy with Psychology with Work Placement (VL80) courses follow the course as set out below, spending the third year on a year abroad or work placement.
