About Our Research

Since it was established in 1970, the Department of Sociology at Warwick has a rich history of critical and cutting-edge research. At present, our staff continue to pursue research that addresses the contemporary challenges of our time whilst developing innovative sociological theories and methodologies that can address these challenges.

Our research addresses local, national, regional, transnational and global issues through the themes (our research clusters) of Race, Ethnicity and Migration, Feminism, Gender & Sexuality, Violence and Social Justice, Just Eco-Geo-Political Futures & Technology, Economy and Society, and through the research centres that we host -- the Social Theory Centre and the Centre for the Study of Women and Gender.

The combination of research clusters, research centres, collaborative, inclusive and organic relationships with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies as well as other departments across the Faculty of Social Sciences and Arts, means that our department provides a supportive infrastructure and environment for individual and collaborative disciplinary as well as interdisciplinary research.

We endeavour to provide our staff, early career research fellows, and PhD students with a supportive research environment through numerous departmental research activities and events including readings groups, seminars and annual public lectures. Our staff continually produce excellent outputs, impactful research, and are successful in grant awards which enable them to explore new and innovative research agendas.

Sociology@Warwick celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2020 with a commitment to sustain and continue to develop our critical and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of society and trailblazing public sociology. Research conducted by our staff is often impactful, publicly engaged, and addresses the significant challenges that face contemporary societies and cultures such as societal inequalities, social justice, ecological crises, and technological transformations.

We build on the strong foundation of sociological research in our department. We continue to be committed to fostering critical, cutting-edge, and public-facing research and impact. Our staff are engaged in shaping the future of sociology.
