Overview

This Summer School focuses on the behavioural science of understanding and influencing human decisions. This is a focal tool for anyone wanting to improve how organisations, workplaces, governments, and societies function.

The Summer School will dive into why people make certain judgements and how to guide those choices more effectively. You will learn to design and test new ideas and methods based on hard empirical evidence. You will learn how to encourage and evaluate honesty, cooperation, risk, patience, healthy choices and greener habits, among other everyday decisions and social behaviours.

By exploring the science behind judgment and decision-making, participants will learn how to initiate changes that benefit individuals and entire groups.

The programme features expert talks from research scientists and practitioners, group discussions, and poster sessions. These sessions will give participants the confidence to apply these principles in scientific and real-world practical settings.

The Summer School is targeted at doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty in the behavioural and decision sciences (including economics, psychology, sociology, philosophy, brain science, organisational behaviour, management science, and social policy), as well as industry professionals from the private and public sectors who are eager to learn about novel approaches to applying decision science in policy and business settings.

Arriving by car

There is no provision for cars under the Shard and limited parking available in the SE1 area. Public car parking close to the Shard is available at:

Arriving by tube and/or train

Arriving by Tube

London Bridge Station is served by the Jubilee and Northern Lines of the London Underground.

On arrival on the platform at London Bridge Tube Station please follow the signs which say ‘The Shard’. On exiting the ticket barriers you should follow the directions for ‘The Shard Offices’ (not Hotel or the View from the Shard).

If asked by the security staff at the entrance to the Shard, visitors should say that they are joining an event or attending a meeting in the WBS offices on Level 17 or Level 13 as appropriate.

Please go to the main reception and give your name. See section below ‘At Main Reception’.

For events a dedicated Events Desk will be staffed to receive delegates and issue visitor passes.

Arriving by Overland Train

On arrival at London Bridge Station, please exit the concourse. The Shard’s main entrance for offices is on the same level as the concourse and to the left. See below ‘At Main Reception’.

Arrival at Main Reception, Security & Contact Details

All expected visitors will have been registered with the main Shard Reception by WBS staff. For larger events a representative of the event will assist at the Events Desk on the ground floor. If arriving individually or in small groups you will be given a white visitors pass which must be returned on leaving the building. Larger groups may be asked to proceed without a visitor’s pass.

Main Reception staff will direct you to Security (see below).

All visitors are required to show photo ID on arrival. The accepted forms of ID are: driving license, passport (or a photo of either of these), or two bank cards.

Security

All bags and coats are scanned, and visitors are asked to step through a metal detector.

Use of Lifts

Touch number 17 or 13 (WBS’s floor) in the touch pad outside the lifts and watch for the letter of the lift assigned (A, B, C, H, or I). Do not join any other lift other than the one directed as there are no internal buttons within the lifts for choosing a floor.

At the end of your meeting you should press the Exit key or number 2 on the keypad outside the lifts to be taken down to the main exit from the building.
