WMG graduate recognised by leading professional body

Akzhunis Arystanbek, WMG Master’s in Supply Chain Logistics Management graduate, has won the Logistics Research Network Dissertation of the YearPicture of WMG Graduate, Akzhunis Arystanbek, Award 2022 from the Charted Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).

Akzhunis’s dissertation entitled “Implementation of Demand Sensing in Supply Chain Management” was nominated by Professor Dan Nunan, Director of full-time Postgraduate Programmes, at WMG at the University of Warwick.

The Awards are open to all UK students, and recognise outstanding dissertations at three levels – Bachelors, Master’s and PhD.

However, this year the panel of judges only awarded a prize in the Master’s category, with Akzhunis’s work being the only nomination that met the exceptional high standard required.

Akzhunis will be presented with her certificate and prize money at the Logistics Research Network Conference (LRN 2022) dinner and awards ceremony on the 8th September.

Alexa Kirkaldy, Associate Professor, at WMG, University of Warwick explains: “Akzhunis’s dissertation was nominated for this award, not only for its academic excellence, but also for the contemporary topic addressed which is essential to the future of world logistics and supply chain management.”

Akzhunis Arystanbek said: “It is a huge honour and pleasure for me to receive this award. My study involved an investigation into a very specialised area of supply chain management. When writing a dissertation, we all stand on the shoulders of giants.

“After graduating I moved on to continue my career in supply chain management at a metals and mining company in Kazakhstan.”

Akzhunis’s research was supervised by David Food, Industrial Fellow at WMG and Head of Supply Chain at Board International, who said: “Akzhunis was a thoroughly diligent and focussed researcher who delivered value and insight both through the creation of the data and in the interpretation of the results, delivering insights that would be commercially beneficial.”

There were 269 Master’s students comprising 156 UK and 89 overseas full-time students, and a further 24 from the part-time Master’s programme.

From the Undergraduate courses, 30 graduated from BSc Cyber Security and two from Digital Healthcare Science.

Celebrations were extra special this year because, as well as celebrating the success of the Class of 2022, it was also an opportunity for graduates whose original ceremonies were postponed, due to Covid-19, to celebrate.

Professor Robin Clark, Dean of WMG, said: “It is always a pleasure to recognise the achievements of our students, and graduation is the culmination of all their hard work under the guidance of the teaching staff.

“It is especially important this year as all the students graduating have had parts of their education journey impacted by the pandemic. To deal with this and demonstrate the resilience and commitment to study is truly commendable. Very well done to everyone and congratulations on your award!”

WMG Associate Professor receives prestigious Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology award

Dr Ian TuersleyCongratulations to WMG Associate Professor Dr Ian Tuersley who has been awarded a IMarEST Outstanding Contribution Award 2019 for Marine Education.

“Dr Tuersley is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of both the IMarEST and the IMechE, and has been part of the teaching team at the University of Warwick for over 25 years.

His nomination for the IMarEST Outstanding Contribution Award was based on his engagement with the ‘European International Submarine Races’ (eISR) and the US equivalent (ISR) competitions over the last seven years. His involvement has reaped a substantial amount of educational benefit that he has developed and disseminated throughout the higher education sector.

Since 2013, Ian has acted as Project Director on the Warwick Submarine team supporting final year engineering students in designing and building a human-powered submarine to the exacting specification of the US and European competitions.

Ian said: “This award is wonderful recognition of a great deal of very successful work – but that has involved contributions from a number of colleagues and of course a lot of my project students. Their enthusiasm and engagement in both the Warwick Submarine project itself and the dissemination of its benefits and achievements has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career as a teacher. I am grateful for having the opportunity to have been involved in this activity with all of these people and would like to extend the recognition that this award offers to all of them.”

Ian’s teaching subjects range from applied statistics and experimental data analysis to various aspects of Engineering Business Management (EBM) at both undergraduate and Master’s degree level. His exceptional standard of teaching has been recognised with several awards including a 'Warwick Award for Teaching Excellence' (WATE).
