Terms of Reference

(a) To develop and implement policy in relation to external quality assessment operations including guidance and requirements issued by the Office for Students, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education and relevant Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies, initiating and coordinating action as appropriate

(b) To develop, monitor and review the University’s systems, policies and guidance for assuring and enhancing the academic standards and quality of students’ learning experience in coordination with relevant University committees, departments and centres

(c) To develop and review processes for the internal and external review of modules and courses and to consider and manage the outcomes of these processes

(d) To monitor the outcomes from, and the effectiveness of, the external examiner system for taught courses including matters identified in external examiners’ reports

(e) To consider matters requiring enhancement arising from reports of reviews of courses, whether undertaken through Institutional Teaching and Learning Review, in response to a specific need, arising from a PSRB engagement or commissioned for any other reason

(f) To consider data, thematic issues and operational matters arising from the operation of the student complaints, appeals and other areas of student casework

(g) To have oversight of the University’s approach to assuring the completeness, accuracy and reliability of information provided for prospective and current students

(h) To consider regular reports on metrics relating to academic departments arising from national surveys, analysis of the student body, student progression and attainment and the student experience in order to take a risk-based approach to the quality of discipline-level education activity

(i) To consider other matters specifically referred to it by the University Education Committee and to make regular reports to the University Education Committee

(j) To consider academic issues relating to education provision offered by academic departments and across departmental boundaries, including matters that may be raised by the University Education Committee, the Boards of the Faculties or other appropriate bodies within the University

(k) To consider proposals and reports relating to education provision from other committees.

(l) To advise on matters relating to the policy and strategy underpinning the production of the student Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR)

(m) To receive audit reports of the undergraduate and postgraduate taught module approval processes within academic departments from the Faculty Education Committees
