This broad statement of purpose, core business and indicative business for School/Department Education Committees (or equivalent) has been approved in place of a single terms of reference and constitution. Approved by the Senate, it acknowledges the variety of departmental structures and committees engaged in education while recognising the shared purpose and reporting lines.
Broad Statement of Purpose:
The School/Department Education Committee (or equivalent) maintains a strategic overview of education and student experience across all levels of study. It fosters a culture of excellence in learning, teaching and assessment and student experience, enabling the sharing of best practice to enhance student success. It has responsibility for shaping and managing the education portfolio within the School/Department and for the maintenance of academic standards. It develops and monitors School/Departmental priorities with reference to the Education and Student Experience Strategy and supporting strategies. Membership aligns with the principles of the Academic Governance Framework.
Core business for School/Department Education Committees (or equivalent) includes (but is not limited to) responsibility for the following within the School/Department:

Considers School/Departmental education and assessment strategies.

Fosters a culture of excellence in learning, teaching and assessment and student experience.

Considers issues identified by its SSLCs.

Maintains an overview of curriculum development and recommends approval of new course and constituent modules to the Curriculum Approval Panel, considers minor amendments for approval in line with the requirements of University policy.

Monitors School/Departmental Course and module reviews.

Supports the monitoring and analysis of data in relation to student success.

Considers matters arising from External Examiners’ reports and external bodies, developing and monitoring action plans.

Develops and delivers plans and programmes of work in support of School/Departmental priorities and the University’s Education and Student experience strategy and supporting strategies.

Supports the development and application of processes and policy to achieve School/Departmental priorities.

Progress towards delivery of the University Education and Student Experience Strategy and supporting strategies.

Themes/trends to inform shared approaches to academic quality standards and enhancement (e.g. common themes from External Examiner reports, issues raised by Exam Boards, Student Surveys, accolades, prizes, innovation or best practice in teaching, learning and assessment).

Any concerns/issues or sharing of best practice and innovation in relation to learning and teaching, broader education and student experience matters.
