Faculty Education and Student Experience Committee (Arts) (Established 1 August 2025)

Statement of Purpose:

The Faculty Education and Student Experience Committee is responsible for the strategic overview of the implementation of the University Education and Student Experience strategy within the Schools/Departments and across the Faculty.

The Committee has strategic overview of Faculty-level approaches to key sub strategies including teaching, learning, assessment, employability, skills, inclusivity, student success, curriculum development, interdisciplinarity and external engagement.

It has responsibility for enabling work within the Faculty, its Schools, and Departments to:

  • identify, develop and foster excellence and innovation in learning, teaching, assessment and curriculum development.
  • inform shared approaches to academic quality standards and enhancement.
  • enhance the wider student experience in relation to learning and teaching and student success.
  • inform development and application of policy.

The Committee has a remit across and champions the breadth of the Faculty’s taught and postgraduate research courses and across all modes of delivery.

    Terms of Reference

    To approve:

    1. Faculty level approaches, plans and programmes of work in support of the University Education and Student Experience strategy and supporting strategies.

    2. The terms of reference, membership, delegated authority and forthcoming priorities of sub-committees and other bodies reporting to it, where appropriate.

    To recommend:

    3. [To the ESEC] proposals and advice on University strategies, policies, practice and innovation on behalf of the Faculty.

    4. [To the Faculty Steering Group] collective challenges and opportunities to secure the implementation of the University Education and Student Experience Strategy and supporting strategies.

    To receive:

    5. [From Schools/Departments] thematic updates on progress towards the implementation of plans and programmes of work in support of the University Education and Student Experience strategy and supporting strategies.

    6. [From Schools/Departments] the sharing of best practice in areas relating to education, the student experience and external engagement, including as recognised in sector metrics.

    7. [From Schools/Departments] updates on curriculum development in support of interdisciplinarity, innovation and excellence in learning and teaching.

    8. [From Schools/Departments] thematic updates on learning and teaching excellence and enhancement informed by School/Department outcomes from institutional and external reviews of the quality of education.

    9. [From the Chair and Schools/Departments] periodic reports on issues arising from the broader education and student experience.

    10. [from Faculty Representatives on Senate or its committees and sub-committees] periodic reports on matters of relevance across the Faculty.

    11. Reports on matters referred to it by the Senate or its committees and sub-committees to stimulate and share good and innovative practice across the Faculty.
