Staff and Postgraduate Research students

Workarea desktop PCs are open for use to anyone who is a member of the University.

The experience you have when you use a Workarea desktop will depend on whether you are a taught postgraduate, staff or a research postgraduate, and whether your department and you have been migrated to the Managed Windows 7 desktop.

  • Taught postgraduates - the desktop experience will be the same as that of an undergraduate student.
  • Staff and research postgraduates - the desktop experience will be broadly the same as a student with one or two important differences:
  1. You can login with your usual username and password.
  2. Your H: and M: drives will be available and this is where you should save important data.
  3. You can print.
  4. You can use built in applications such as Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office.
  5. You will NOT be able to see the applications in the “IT Services Delivered Applications” folder that are available to students and taught postgraduates. You will be able to see the applications in “IT Services Delivered Applications” folder that are available to you on your own PC.
  6. You will be able to see the applications in the 'Get More Apps...' link inside the “IT Services Delivered Applications” folder that are available for installation on workarea desktop PCs. You will NOT be able to see applications in the 'Get More Apps...' link inside the “IT Services Delivered Applications” folder that are available to you on your own Managed Windows 7 desktop PC.

Please Note:

Outlook is NOT avavilable on workarea desktop PCs. To access e-mail please use webmail.

Profiles are created locally on workarea desktop PCs. This means that any information stored in them is visible to anyone who logs in. The profileson workaea computers are emptied of all data every 24 hours.
