Can you tell us about your journey into your sport and what inspired you to get involved with Team Warwick?

I’ve always done some sort of sport growing up, whether it be swimming, basketball or ballet. When I watched my sister play netball, that’s when I decided I wanted to play as well. I’ve never looked back.

I knew that sport would play a massive role when I started University. I joined the University of Warwick Women’s Netball Club - a decision that has helped me enjoy my time at Warwick.

What does your typical week look like as part of Team Warwick?

Throughout the week I have gym and court sessons and play in mid-week BUCS matches. I also do a couple of extra gym or conditioning sessions.

How do you balance your academic commitments with training and competitions?

I always use free time in between training sessions, even if it’s just half an hour. I sometimes get to the Sports & Wellness Hub early and do an hour of work before training. I try to do little and often to prevent the work from building up.

What kind of support have you received through Team Warwick and what difference has it made to your experience?

As a scholar, the help that Team Warwick has given me has been incredible. Travelling to Loughborough two to three times a week has been a large financial commitment, but the bursary has really helped relieve the financial stress of this.

I’ve also had multiple minor injuries throughout the past two years, and the physiotherapy has helped me make a quick recovery and get back to my sport.

What has been the biggest challenge in your sporting journey, and how did you overcome it?

When I didn’t get invited back to the England Academy, I really struggled. While sport is important, I realised, with the support from the University of Warwick Women's Netball Club and my friends, that there are so many other important things that I could prioritise. I developed a healthier relationship with competitive sport and put less pressure on myself.

How has Team Warwick helped you develop professionally and what opportunities has it given you?

Being part of UWWNC has allowed me to take on much more challenging roles, such as the BUCS 1s & 2s Captain. This has helped me become more comfortable with taking on a leadership role, and working out how people take in information differently.

Additionally, this year I had a much higher commitment to Loughborough Lightning by being part of their NXT Gen squad. The bursary has allowed me to commit to this, and Team Warwick has supported me when my academics and sport overlap.

What role have your teammates, coaches, or support staff played in your journey?

They’ve all played a massive role. My teammates have helped me get through some difficult times in my sport, and my coaches have pushed me to challenge myself and learn that change only happens when you put yourself in uncomfortable situations.

How has your sporting experience shaped your wellbeing and sense of belonging at the University of Warwick?

It’s massively helped with this. Joining UWWNC has been such a big part of my university life. With Warwick being an academic university, there can be quite a high workload, but training after a long day of work makes me feel so refreshed and clears my mind.

What are your current sporting goals and how are you being supported in reaching them?

This year, I really want to push with my home club, Eagles Netball Club, to try and win Premiere League 1. I also want Warwick 1st to be promoted to the Midlands Tier 1. I know that everyone in Team Warwick would love to achieve promotion!

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining a club, performance team, or applying for a scholarship at Warwick?

I would say put yourself forward for as many taster sessions of sports that you’re interested in. There will be no other time when you’ll have this much access to such a wide range of sports, and if you don’t like a sport you’ve tried, then at least you know.

If you’re thinking of applying for a scholarship, it is 100% worth it. You have nothing to lose by applying for it. It has been such a massive help in my sporting journey.

Did Team Warwick influence your decision to study at the University of Warwick? If so, how?

The facilities that Team Warwick provides did play a role in my decision to study at Warwick. While I mainly applied for academic reasons, the facilities, such as the courts and the gym, helped strengthen my decision.
