I am a Student Outside of the UK

Section 1: Purpose and Contents of this page:

This page has been created to give guidance to students who are currently outside of the UK.


Please ensure you carefully read the guidance provided for your situation BEFORE you contact Student Immigration.


The arrival deadlines outlined on this page are specific to degree-level courses including incoming exchange/visiting students.

Section 2: Undergraduate students

Physical Arrival Deadline:

If you are starting a full time 3-year or 4-year undergraduate course in Academic Year 2022/2023:

You must ensure you have completed your Online Enrolment by your Course Start Date, as listed on your current CAS.


You must attempt to arrive in the UK by your Course Start Date, as listed on your current CAS.


If you are unable to arrive in the UK by your Course Start Date, you have to your CAS Latest Start Date to arrive in the UK.


If you have not arrived in the UK by your CAS Latest Start Date, you will be withdrawn from your course.


You cannot begin your studies until you have arrived in the UK and your Enrolment Status is Fully Enrolled.


You should make arrangements with your Department to catch up on any period of study you missed up to your arrival date.

If you have your Temporary Travel Vignette (TTV), but have not travelled to the UK yet:


You must travel within the validity of your TTV.


You must ensure that your TTV is stamped with your date of entry by UK Border Force on arrival at a UK Border.


You must upload a copy of your stamped TTV to your enrolment portal.

If your TTV has expired or will expire by your new intended travel date:


You will need to make a BRP Vignette Transfer Application to obtain a new TTV.


You should ensure that you give yourself enough time to make a BRP Vignette Transfer application and travel to the UK.


You should have already received an email confirming that your arrival deadline is extended to a future date.


If you haven't, please contact us to re-send the email.


This email can then be included in your next vignette transfer application as evidence that you have been remote studying.

If you have not made your visa application:


Your CAS is only valid for 6 months from the date it was assigned with the UKVI.


You should not use an expired CAS in a Student Visa application, as this will most likely result in a refusal.


If your CAS has expired, you should submit a new CAS Request to the UG Visa Team:

Section 3: Postgraduate Taught students

Physical arrival deadline

If you are starting a full time Postgraduate Taught course in Academic Year 2022/2023:

You must ensure you have completed your Online Enrolment by your Course Start Date, as listed on your current CAS.


You must attempt to arrive in the UK by your Course Start Date, as listed on your current CAS.


If you are unable to arrive in the UK by your Course Start Date, you have to your CAS Latest Arrival Date to arrive in the UK.


If you have not arrived in the UK by your CAS Latest Arrival Date, you will be withdrawn from your course.


You cannot begin your studies until you have arrived in the UK and your Enrolment Status is Fully Enrolled.


You should make arrangements with your Department to catch up on any period of study you missed up to your arrival date.

If you have not yet made your visa application

Overseas applications can take up to 5- 6 weeks from application to visa decision.


The UKVI state you should not book your Flight / Travel Ticket until you have received your application decision. If you do, ensure you are able to amend the travel ticket as the UKVI cannot guarantee a decision will be made before you are due to travel.


Therefore, please plan your application and travel arrangements to ensure you arrive in the UK by your Course Start Date.

Section 4: Postgraduate Research students

Physical Arrival Deadline:

If you started your Course before 01 July 2022:

You must have arrived in the UK by your CAS Latest Arrival Date - Please check your CAS carefully to find the 'latest start date' specific to you.


If you have not arrived by this date, you will ordinarilly be withdrawn from your course.


In this circumstance, you should contact your Department as soon as possible to discuss your Academic Options.

If your course begins on or after 01 July 2022:

Your physical arrival deadline is usually 1 month after the official 'course start date'.


Please check your CAS carefully to find the 'latest start date' specific to you.


If you are unable to arrive in the UK by this date, you should contact your Department and Admissions Team to discuss your situation.

If you have already made your visa application:

If you already travelled to the UK, collected your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) and then left the UK:

Your BRP will allow you to re-enter the UK whilst it is valid.

If you have your Temporary Travel Vignette (TTV), but have not travelled to the UK yet:

You must travel within the validity of your TTV.

If your TTV has expired or will expire by your intended travel date:

You will need to make a BRP Vignette Transfer Application to obtain a new TTV.


You should ensure that you give yourself enough time to make a BRP Vignette Transfer application and travel to the UK.


If authorised by your department, you should have already received an email confirming that your arrival deadline is extended.


If you haven't obtained authorisation from your department, please contact your academic department for an email confirmation and then forward this to us so that we can re-send the email. This email can then be included in your next vignette transfer application as evidence that you have been remote studying.

If you have not made your visa application:

If you wish to apply under the Graduate Route:


There is no deadline to enter/re-enter the UK, but you must do so before your Tier 4/student visa expires to be eligible to apply.


You must have studied in the UK for at least 12 months by the time you graduate, excluding short holidays.


Periods of remote study between 24 January 2020 and 27 September 2021 may be counted towards time spent in the UK under the UKVI covid concession.
