Estranged Student Form 2025 Entry

Warwick offers a wide range of pastoral, academic and financial support for students who come to study here. We also have a named contact for students who are independent because they are estranged from their parentsLink opens in a new window so that you have a single point of contact both before you get here and during your studies.

Please complete the form below so that we can signpost you to the most appropriate support available.

Definition of 'Estranged Student' status

An 'estranged student' is a young person under the age of 25 who is studying without the support and approval of both of their parents due to a breakdown in their relationship – this might be their birth, step or adoptive parents, and sometimes their wider family members. Students in this situation are able to apply to Student Finance England (or equivalent student finance bodies in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) as ‘Independent and Estranged’. You could apply for student finance as an estranged student if:

  • You haven’t had any contact with both of your parents for 12 months or more; or
  • Your relationship with both of your parents has broken down within the last 12 months and you don’t expect this to change in the near future.

If you are applying to Student Finance as an Independent student for another reason - if you are bereaved, for example - we would encourage you to contact the Lifecycle Team at lifecycleteam@warwick.ac.uk to discuss the support options available to you.

3. Further details and evidence

An 'estranged student' is a young person under the age of 25 who is studying without the support and approval of both of their parents due to a breakdown in their relationship – this might be their birth, step or adoptive parents, and sometimes their wider family members.

Using the definition of above, please can you confirm whether you are an estranged student? (required)
Please select one of the following that best reflects your experience: (required)

As an Estranged Student, you will need to complete your Student Finance assessment confirming your estranged status. You can find out how to do this here: SFE Estranged Student factsheet. One way to confirm your estrangement is to complete Student Finance England's Confirmation of Estrangement form - 2025/26 (you will need to complete this and upload to your SFE portal).

Once complete, Student Finance should then provide you with a confirmation email confirming your independent status as an estranged student.  Please upload this email confirmation from Student Finance England here. Your confirmation email from SFE should say something like "Your independent student status has been awarded because you’re irreconcilably estranged from your parents" (this may be granted for the duration of your studies, or for one academic year e.g. 2025/26).

We will need this to set up the relevant support for you.

If you have not applied to SFE as an Estranged Student yet, or are experiencing any issues with this process, please contact us at lifecycleteam@warwick.ac.uk.
