Realising Opportunities

Realising Opportunities (RO) is a unique collaboration of leading, research intensive universities, working together to promote fair access and social mobility of students from groups underrepresented in higher education.

The RO programme gives students a wide range of information in a variety of ways in order for students to have the space and support to make informed decisions. Students participating in RO have access to all of the RO Partner universities throughout their time on the programme with alternative offers available for those who successfully complete.

Information for Schools and Colleges

RO gives students support during their post 16 studies to develop their skills and feel prepared for university. 93% of RO students in 2022 applied to university by the end of Year 13 – more than double the overall proportion of 18-year-olds applying to university that year.

Recent independent evaluation shows that 74% of programme graduates progress to higher education. 67% progress to research intensive universities which represents higher rates than the national averages.

Information for Parents and Carers

Since 2010, RO has supported over 11,000 students from over 500 schools and colleges. During the course of the programme, the students will develop the skills they need to be successful at university and to make informed choices for their future.

Students are supported throughout the programme by their RO host university, the RO Central Team and a team of undergraduate students based at the RO Partner universities.

Successful completion of the RO programme gives students the opportunity to have their achievements recognised through UCAS, resulting in additional consideration and the potential for alternative offers from the RO Partner universities.
