Manet at Warwick

There are 2 sessions surrounding the painting 'The Execution of Maximilian' by Edouard Manet, one for Year 10 pupils and one for Year 12 pupils.

Short Outline of Sessions.

Film and Television Studies

This session will look at the different ways stories can unfold in films, and how audiences make sense of them.

French

A degree in French explores not just the French language but also French and Francophone literature, culture and politics. This session looks at Manet's world in nineteenth-century France.

Hispanic Studies

The Hispanic worl reaches across Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia, from the Caribbean to the Pacific. This session explores Hispanic Cultures in Central America.

History of Art

This session looks at the innovative painting techniques and compositional devices that Manet developed to capture the new experiences and alienation of modern life.

Philosophy

Philosophy explores the history of ideas and how they relate to our experiences today. This session examines whether what we learn from paintings differs from what we learn from photographs.

Application Process

Around 60 students will attend each event, with a maximum of ten from any one school or college. Please note that sessions will be both lecture style and interactive.

Applications must be submitted by a member of staff at the individual school, and all groups must be accompanied on the day. We are unable to take individual applications for this event. All applications will be ranked, with priority as follows:

  • Schools with below national average A*-C GCSE rate (including English and Maths) and above national average Free School Meals eligibility (FSM)
  • Schools with below average A*-C GCSE rate and below average FSM
  • Schools with above average A*-C GCSE rate and above average FSM
