This summer, the Widening Participation Team welcomed Year 10 students from schools across the West Midlands to a week-long Work Experience Programme designed to raise aspirations, build confidence and help break down barriers to higher education.

Taking part in projects across Engineering and Creative Arts, students were challenged to think creatively, solve problems and collaborate with their peers, while gaining valuable insight into university life and exploring potential future careers.

The programme was specifically designed to support students from underrepresented backgrounds, providing them with opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to progress to higher education and beyond. It also encouraged students to see themselves as belonging in university and professional environments, helping them to recognise the opportunities available to them.

The week culminated in a showcase celebration event, where students proudly presented their projects to family and friends, University staff and invited guests. The event was officially opened by Vice-Chancellor Professor Stuart Croft, who welcomed attendees and celebrated the students' hard work and achievements.

It was fantastic to see the progress students had made throughout the week, with their growing confidence evident as they presented their work and reflected on their experiences.

The success of this year's programme was made possible through the support and commitment of colleagues from across the University, who generously shared their expertise, hosted activities and encouraged students throughout the week.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making this year's Year 10 Work Experience Programme such a success and, most importantly, to all the students who took part and brought their enthusiasm, creativity and ambition to the week.
