Staff Green Champions: 10 actions to go green

Below are 10 actions. Challenge yourself: how many of these can you complete this year?

1Be aware of Warwick's environmental targets

We have an extensive set of environmental targets and you can help us to achieve them. Found out what they are here.

2Calculate your carbon footprint

How much are you doing to cut your personal carbon footprint? Could you do more? Completing the World Wildlife Federation's carbon footprint calculator with honest answers may give you pause for thought.

3Waste not, Want not: Recycle!

Most people know about recycling. But just how well do you know this topic? If you investigate you might surprise yourself...

Recycling reduces our impact but stop and think: do you need it in the first place? For example, instead of that notebook take notes electronically. Go digital in the office and avoid printing large amounts of paper. Printing double-sided and monochrome is better.

Check your office and its recycling bins and use them correctly. Separate food waste if possible from recyclable plastics and papers. Check the labelling of your product if you are uncertain how to dispose of it.

Bring your own lunch to the office in Tupperware and avoid plastic wrapping, disposable cutlery and unnecessary packaging. If you do eat out, ask for a take away box if you don’t finish your meal and avoid the food waste.

If you live in Coventry, be sure to download the ‘Your Rubbish’ app.

4Switch it off

If it doesn’t need to be on then why is it? Remember to turn it off, standby is still using energy.

At the end of the day, ensure you have switched off all electrical equipment (that is safe to turn off).

Turn off computers when not in use, avoid screensavers and standby mode.

Switch off all light switches when not in the room or if the lighting in the office is sufficient with natural lighting.

5How do you get around?

Bikes, buses and car sharing. There are many ways to get to and from campus and around the local area more sustainably and can even benefit staff financially.

Cycling and walking improve your health and wellbeing and they save you money too – check out the Cycle to Work scheme!

6Vegetables are good for you

Meat has a far bigger carbon footprint attached to it than vegetables. If you can eat less of it, your carbon footprint will drop as a result. Even just one meal without meat a week helps! Find some great recipes and ideas here: www.meatfreemondays.com.

Try reducing or even eliminating your meat consumption. The University offers various vegetarian and vegan options in the outlets.

7BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle… or mug)

Bring your own refillable water bottle into the office and fill it up with filtered water available around the campus.

Prefer a hot beverage? Take your mug and your favourite tea to work.

8Think Global and Act Local. Where do you shop and what do you buy?

What could you change? Buy free range, seasonal and local where you can.

Take a reusable plastic shopping bag with you when you shop to avoid having to purchase additional plastic bags.

9Not too hot, not too cold. Keeping the thermostat set

Set the office temperature the same year round. Bring a cardigan for colder months and wear lighter clothing in the office for the summer months.

10Learn and share Information

Contact the Energy and Sustainability Team for ideas and a checklist on what you can do in your area. Share valuable information with other colleagues by creating posters by the kitchen or sharing key points in a memorandum. Create the discussion on sustainability and allow new ideas to be brought up.
