Eatwise Test Kitchen

The Eatwise Test Kitchen has opened in University House and has taken lots of steps to be more sustainable. The food served in ETK is made and prepared on campus, using seasonal ingredients to create nutritious dishes with an aim of feeding both body and mind. Many of the dishes are plant-based, which helps to cut down the carbon footprint of the menu. A focus on using ingredients that are in season in the UK at the time of creation also helps to ensure that food miles are kept to a minimum where possible.

Eatwise Test Kitchen doesn’t have any disposable takeaway cups available. You are therefore encouraged to bring your own reusable cup if you're looking to get a takeaway drink. By bringing your own cup, you can save 25p on the cost of the drink - saving you money and reducing waste! ETK also encourages customers to bring along their own takeaway containers for food if they wish to take it away, to also minimise the use of disposable packaging. This aligns with the Way to Sustainable strategy as it prevents waste being created in the first place, meaning the café is minimising its waste and reducing its carbon emissions. We frequently find coffee cups littered on the Warwick Wombles Litter Picks around campus, showing how single use coffee cups are an issue on campus. ETK does a brilliant job in addressing this issue!

Another way in which Eatwise is working to reduce food waste is through an initiative in partnership with the Chemistry Department called the ‘Community Fridge’. The Community Fridge is a way to distribute surplus food to those that can make use of it. It will offer a variety of food items all free of charge and available on a first-come-first-served basis. The initiative launched on the 11th of March and is located on the Science Concourse (over the bridge from the library).

Some members of the Energy and Sustainability Team visited the café on the opening day. The food served was vibrant, tasty and filling! See pictures below to see what you can expect when you visit.
