IATL win co-developed bid for funding from the HEFCE Catalyst Fund

Elena Riva (IATL) and Louise Gracia (Dean of Students) recently co-developed a successful bid for funding from the ‘HEFCE Catalyst Fund: Supporting mental health and wellbeing for postgraduate research students’.

It will result in a collaborative, cross-institutional project co-led by IATL, the Dean of Students and the Graduate School. This project also involves Mental Health and Wellbeing (MHW), Counselling Services, Warwick Sport, the Library, and Warwick Business School (WBS).'

Dr Elena Riva contributes towards the 2018 'Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching: Pedagogy and Practice' conference

IATL Senior Teaching Fellow Dr Elena Riva has recently contributed to the Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching: Pedagogy and Practice (Leeds, March 2018) conference, with the talk "Student-devised Assessment | An interdisciplinary ‘love story’", based on her assessment strategies for the UG module 'Genetics: Science and Society' and the PG module 'Thinking Water'.

IATL undergraduate modules: online registration now open

On an IATL module you will work with students and lecturers from right across the university, developing new ways of understanding the world by making connections between ideas, experiences and practice. Our modules are available to second years and above, in a variety of CATS weightings. New for 2018/19 are: Understanding Wellbeing- Theory & Practice; South Asia in Britain; Introduction to Design Thinking Theory and Practice. There will also be revised modules in: Navigating Psychopathology (IL002), and Entrepreneurship: A Critical Perspective (IL020). You can view all our modules here.

ICUR 2018- Call for Abstracts- Deadline 31st May

The sixth annual International Conference of Undergraduate Research (ICUR) will be held on 25 & 26 September 2018 and is open to undergraduate researchers from any discipline. Submit your abstract of 250 words for the chance to present to an audience around the world. There are opportunities to find out more through informal sessions as well as workshops on writing your abstract, and intercultural communication. Click here to see the different training options.

Critical reflection on organisation practice at a UK university through scholarship of teaching and learning: measuring impact

This WIHEA seminar will be delivered by former IATL Director Paul Taylor, now a Pro Dean for Student Education at the University of Leeds. It will include critical accounts of work at Leeds, and new research exploring how ‘high impact experiences’ such as undergraduate research affect the world beyond the university.

New IATL Director announced

Dr Jonathan Heron, currently our Deputy Director and Principal Teaching Fellow, is to become Director of IATL for an initial term of three years. He was a founding member of IATL in 2010, following appointment to the university in 2007. We would also like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Dr Nicholas Monk, who will step down as Director later this year (see his newsletter editorial).

Warwick student wins Posters in Parliament

Two Warwick students, Mike Hopper and James Blake, were selected to attend Posters in Parliament on 20 February 2018. The calibre of research on display by undergraduates from around the UK was exceptional and we are pleased to announce that James was selected by the panel of judges as the overall winner for his poster ‘Modelling panspermia in the TRAPPIST-1 system’.

IATL’s Elena Riva promoted to Senior Teaching Fellow

Congratulations to Elena Riva, who is now IATL Senior Teaching Fellow. Elena is Director of Undergraduate Studies for IATL, convenes the undergraduate module ‘Genetics: Science and Society’ and the postgraduate module ‘Thinking Water’, and is currently leading the research project 'Improving students' wellbeing in the teaching and learning environment'.

Students wanted to help develop new Master’s module

Mairi Macintyre (pictured), Principal Teaching Fellow in WMG, is looking for three local students for paid work to help develop the new ‘Play: Pedagogy Theory and Practice’ module, for launch in September 2018. IATL funding was awarded to develop the module in a partnership with Design Museum London and Royal Holloway University of London plus international colleagues at Leiden University, the Netherlands, and Monash University, Australia.

Teaching across thresholds: radical virtue epistemology in secondary and higher education

This workshop, by former IATL team member Phil Gaydon, will take radical virtue epistemology – which asserts that knowledge is not static, but a dramatic moment, a lived experience, and a passionate embodiment of our most deeply held values – and explore precisely what it entails for education, and its potential to engage students.
