A bronze As showing the deified Augustus struck c. AD 34-37 (during the reign of Tiberius) in the mint of Rome.

Obverse

  1. Legend: DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER (referring to the divine Augustus as the father (pater) of Tiberius).
  2. Divine head of Augustus: Augustus is shown as a god via a radiate crown.

Reverse

  1. Legend: S C (= senatus consultum), ‘by decree of the Senate’.
  2. Thunderbolt: A winged thunderbolt with bolts of lightning coming from it. The thunderbolt was an attribute of Jupiter, and so Augustus is aligned with the god here.
