Using the Quest 1 headsets
We have 12 of the first edition Quest 1 headsets, with a selection of interesting apps installed, including Tilt Brush (3D painting, drawing and sculpting), Ocean Rift (swim with sea creatures), Virtuoso (make music), Beat Sabre (exercise to music), sports apps, and more. In addition, Youtube and Meta TV can be used to access 360 videos.
Charging
Plug the USBC cable into the slot on the left of the headset, and use the supplied charger. An orange light next to the power button (right side of the headset) shows it is charging. Green when fully charged.
Each hand controller has an AA battery. Slide off the cover on the handset to fit the battery. Insert the battery with the positive end towards the bottom of the handset.
REMOVE THE BATTERIES IF NOT USING FOR MORE THAN A COUPLE OF DAYS.
Switching on
Use the on/off switch on the right hand side.
Fitting
If the user normally wears distance glasses (not reading glasses) they should wear them in the headset.
To put on, tilt the straps upwards, place on the face, and tilt back to a straight position.
Loosen and tighten the straps to adjust to fit.
If the view is blurry, move the headset around the face a little until it is clear. There is also an adjuster on the bottom-left, that can be used to adjust the width between the eyes, which can help.
Sound
Volume buttons are on right of the underside of the headset.
The headsets have built-in 360 sound projection, but can also be used with headphones. Plug them into the socket on the left.
Hand controllers
Each controller has a set of buttons and triggers. The main controller on the front is usually used to make selections. This works like a mouse pointer in the main interface of the VR experience. The left trigger is used in different ways in apps.
Each controller has a joystick, for scrolling (e.g. for scrolling through the list of apps).
The right hand controller (marked with an R) has the home button (used to return to the main menu), A, and B (used differently in each app).
The left controller has a menu button, X, and Y, used differently in each app.
In VR, setup and using apps
This video demonstrates the process to follow in VR. It was recorded using the in-built screen recorder. However, this is not quite perfect, as it does not record the "pass through" image when setting the room boundary.
