Stephen Gundle holds degrees from the University of Liverpool, the State University of New York and the University of Cambridge. He held academic positions at Cambridge, Nottingham, Oxford and London before moving to Warwick in 2008. He has been visiting professor at the Université de Paris II and X and at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques, Paris.

Research interests

My research interests lie in the fields of film and cultural and political history with a special emphasis on Italian cinema and other media. I have written about the Italian star system and relations between the media, politics and consumption from Fascism to the present. Recently, I directed a large AHRC research project on the personality cult of Benito Mussolini. I have also written two books about the history of glamour in Europe and the United States. I am currently working on the postwar Italian film industry and issues of feminine beauty and national identity in Europe.

Teaching and supervision

I teach international film history, focussing on cinema’s relations with democracy and dictatorship, stardom and glamour, and Italian cinema and culture.

In 2015-16 I am teaching Film History: Basic Issues and Methods, National Cinemas 1: Italian Cinema from Fascism to Neorealism, and an MA module: History and Memory in Italian Cinema.

I am especially interested in supervising postgraduate projects relating to European film industries, stars and stardom, and all aspects of Italian cinema and society.
