Japanese 5 (LL258)




The module is offered to undergraduates who already have a good knowledge of Japanese (i.e. good A level or equivalent). Please note that students who studied Japanese 4 during Oct 2007-Jun 2011 are not permitted to take this module. This is due to re-structuring of existing Japanese courses 1-4

Main Objectives:

The module develops further competence in practical use of Japanese in a social, study and work-related context. Students will learn to accomplish a wide range of communicative tasks in an accurate, fluent and approriate manner. Students will also gain further insights into the modern and traditional culture and society of Japan.


This 30 credit module is also available as 24 credits.


2 hours language class each week for 21 weeks.
Students are reminded that 1 credit = 10 hours of study, therefore the minimum expected amount of study is 240 hours, which averages over 10 hours per week. A substantial amount of independent study is therefore required.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the module, students will have:
  • General: Communicate with good language proficiency in a variety of general situations, including informal and formal contexts, in an appropriate manner.Reading: Demonstrate a high level of competence in reading by understanding the main message and details of some authentic materials such as newspapers and websites aimed at the general public.
  • Writing: Demonstrate writing competence to write an essay on contemporary social issues as well as write formal letters in an accurate, well structured and appropriate manner, using appropriate syntax and vocabulary.
  • Speaking: Demonstrate sufficient oral proficiency to enable them to engage in a debate or give a talk on a variety of general topics in a clear and fluent matter.
  • Listening: Demonstrate a high level of listening skills to understand longer and more complex spoken language such discussions, interviews or news, which they may encounter in their social, academic or professional contexts in Japan.

  • Giving a detailed description of people and places;
  • Explaining customs and taboos;
  • Expressing changes;
  • Expressing opinions, agreements and disagreements;
  • Conversing politely;
  • Extracting information from authentic texts;
  • Writing an email;
  • Writing a polite letter;
Grammatical content
  • Verb forms, such as the “potential forms”, the “passive forms”, the “volitional forms” etc;
  • Expressions for gratitude and politeness;
  • Students will learn an additional 160 new kanji;
