Liberal Arts with Modern Languages and Cultures

Liberal Arts With Modern Languages and Cultures will open your eyes to new and exciting dimensions of other cultures.

As well as studying languages, you will come to understand in depth the history, politics, and literature that have helped shape those languages and the places in which they are spoken throughout the world.

Modern Languages and Cultures is a vibrant interdisciplinary Department, and your Liberal Arts training will prepare you to engage confidently in modules which address important questions about society, culture and identity from different disciplinary perspectives.

What will I study on the Modern Languages and Cultures Route?

On this route, you might choose to study creative expressions in cinema, art and literature. You might study different historical periods, people and cultures, or focus on politics, sociology and public policy. You might explore philosophy, ideology and the evolution of thought in different cultural contexts.

You will undertake three years of language and cultural studies in the same area. These three years will provide you with linguistic competence and in-depth cultural understanding. You can also choose to take additional cultural modules as part of your options. Most cultural modules are delivered in English, with primary materials often in the target language.

Those studying Liberal Arts with Modern Languages and Cultures can choose to specialise in: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish.

While we do not formally require specific A-Levels for the Liberal Arts degree, some Disciplinary Languages on this route may necessitate a minimum language ability (to be determined by the School of Modern Languages and Cultures), evidenced either through a formal language qualification or interview.

Modules

In addition to language modules taken over three years, cultural modules that may be of interest to Liberal Arts students to take as options include:

Please note:

  • To study this route:
    • You must study 30 CATS of the same Language in each year of study (Y1, Y2 and Final Year).
    • You may wish to take additional cultural modules as part of your optional module choices
  • Module offerings change annually and so individual modules may vary.
