WIHEA 2024 Fellows Profiles

Welcome to our latest cohort of staff and student WIHEA Fellows! They will be developing expertise in areas of interest to them, enhancing practice and policy, and informing our strategic and practical thinking on learning and teaching.

Read on to see the perspectives they bring and what they are looking forward to getting involved in. 

Naveera Abhayawickrama

Law Undergraduate Student, Law

I am a first-year law student with a keen interest in exploring methods to uplift child welfare in countries with inadequate support systems and regulations aimed at protecting children. I am one of the project leaders of the school’s volunteering project and the student lead for the conversation class established to help newly arrived communities. As part of my fellowship, I hope to participate in projects focused on promoting social justice, enhancing children’s welfare and uplifting communities.

Lydia Adigun

Assistant Professor (Teaching Focused), WMG

With over a decade of experience in higher education, programme and project management, and a focus on EDI and sustainability, I bring expertise in innovative teaching, curriculum development, and alumni engagement. I aim to advance these areas, enhance student experiences, and promote inclusivity during my WIHEA Fellowship.

Youn Affejee

PhD in Engineering Education, WMG

My PhD research is on impact evaluation in STEM outreach programs. I am interested in promoting informal learning within and beyond Warwick, including in sports coaching context and widening participation activities. I also look forward to collaborating with WIHEA colleagues on VR-assisted learning, public and community engagement, and interdisciplinarity.

Gunisha Aggarwal

Economics Undergraduate Student, Economics

In my role as a Student Inclusion Officer, I developed a toolkit for personal tutors to better support international students, an inclusive sports strategy for Warwick Sports, and conducted focus groups for the International Awarding Gap Project. I have spearheaded a Diana Award winning initiative HELP Chennai that has helped over 600 students access online education during the pandemic. As an Instructor's Assistant for Kode with Klossy, I created an inclusive and engaging learning environment for over 40 young women and gender-expansive youth to learn web development.

As a Fellow, I am excited about the opportunity to share my perspectives during the Internationalisation and AI in Education Learning Circles. I look forward to contributing to WIHEA projects to create an inclusive learning environment at Warwick through intersectional initiatives.

Dr Devon Allcoat

Assistant Professor (Teaching Focused), WMG

In my teaching role at WMG I specialise in technology, particularly emerging technologies such as virtual reality. I also teach accessible design, and I am passionate about championing accessible and inclusive practices. During my WIHEA Fellowship I aim to work collaboratively to help to shape best practice, contributing to technology-enhanced learning, and improving accessibility at the University of Warwick.

Dr Manoj Kumar Babu

Assistant Professor (Teaching Focused), WMG

As a teaching focused academic I lead Data Science, Machine Learning, and related modules in the WMG undergraduate program. As a part of the fellowship, I would like to explore ways to enable safe and inclusive access to latest AI technologies while enhancing the learning and teaching experiences at Warwick. I am eager to utilise this opportunity to collaborate with fellow educators to enhance practice and policy within our institution and beyond.

Marie Bawden

History Undergraduate Student, History/Centre for Lifelong Learning

I am a part-time History student with extensive work experience in report writing, analysis and engagement with a variety of stakeholders. I am very keen to use these skills within WIHEA to develop and enhance the academic experience of all students, with a particular focus on academic literacies and inclusive assessment.

Shianne Beckett

Electrical and Digital Systems Undergraduate Student, WMG

I am a third-year degree apprentice who is working in Cybersecurity and am studying the software and data pathway for the Digital and Technology Solutions course. With regards to learning circles, I am interested in learning about AI (alongside studying it in my modules) and delving into how we can utilise AI with our learning, as well as using it safely with regards to confidentiality and integrity in the workplace. Also, I am passionate about outreach and giving people from every background opportunity to thrive in their studies.

Sophie Bourne

Culture of the European Renaissance MA Student, Centre for the Study of the Renaissance

I’m interested in making HE more inclusive and diverse; coming from a Widening Participation background I aspire to improve the support pathways available and ensure every student is able to progress and succeed. I’m also interesting in embedding interdisciplinary practices across all courses and exploring how student co-creation can improve student experience across the university.

Ewout Buckens

Teaching and Learning Consultant, WBS

As a Teaching and Learning Consultant, I engage with faculty and professional services staff across the breadth of WBS, mentor members of my team and faculty and push the boundaries to create innovative and student-centred education, online and face-to-face. I also head up the SmartStage team and lead on the strategy and implementation of our SmartStage facility into our online and blended programmes.

My areas of expertise are innovations in live online teaching, enhancing its technological and pedagogical offering, and creating learning design frameworks to improve and enhance asynchronous learning content.

Dr Steven Burke

Skills Developer, Student Opportunity

As Skills Developer my responsibilities include critical thinking, sustainability, self awareness, and reflective practice. As a WIHEA Fellow, I am keen to build on work I am undertaking on skills development, environmental crisis, and sustainability. I hope to develop a network of fellows and members keen to discuss and develop critical thinking as a concept and a practice. I am interested in discussions and projects that engage with these topics, are interdisciplinary in nature, or which overlap with my research interests including histories and human geographies of British imperial identity and worldview.

Andrew Calvert

Research and Academic Support Librarian, Library

Through my role as a Research and Academic Support Librarian, I support students to develop the information skills needed to access collections in ways that can enable achievement, inspire curiosity and scholarship, and that help to navigate the rapidly changing information landscape beyond.

I strongly believe in bringing these skills to life through engagement with collections. As a WIHEA Fellow I am interested in exploring with colleagues how information skills can further be approached in exploratory and participatory ways using the rich resources we have available, to enhance the student learning experience.

Freddie Cendrowicz

History Undergraduate Student, History

I am a third-year undergraduate History student who led a reverse mentoring pilot to address barriers faced by black students in the Warwick History Department. As a WIHEA fellow, I am motivated to use my experience to help overcome the challenges faced by underrepresented students at university. Additionally, I am passionate about collaborating to enhance the student experience and to learn more about inclusive and successful teaching practices here at Warwick.

Dr Romain Chenet

Senior Teaching Fellow, Global Sustainable Development

I’ve been our Director of Undergraduate Studies for a few years and perceived lots of changes in that time. The WIHEA-relevant interests I hope to pursue revolve around fostering equity across markers of intersectionality, and building opportunities to grow varied authentic understandings of what contemporary academia can involve in practice.

Dr Andrew Cooper

Associate Professor, Philosophy

My areas of expertise include philosophy of science and post-Kantian philosophies of nature. I also work on the history of education; my recent book Amalia Holst explores the struggle for women's education in Germany in the long-nineteenth century. My research and teaching is driven by the conviction that the current generation of students are pivotal for responding to the cultural, economic and existential challenges posed by the climate emergency. As a WIHEA fellow, I look forward to contributing to interdisciplinary module design, decolonising the curriculum, and student voice.

Josh Davies

PhD in Chemistry, Chemistry

I am a PhD researcher, graduate teaching assistant (GTA), and disability support worker in the Department of Chemistry. Much of my teaching is based in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching laboratory setting where my approach is founded on inquiry-based learning and creating immersive learning activities, with the aim of engaging students as co-creators in their learning. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and the winner of the Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence for Postgraduates who Teach (WATE PGR) in 2023. I am also actively involved in the design and delivery of chemistry outreach activities and the mentorship of undergraduate students. As a fellow, I am particularly eager to contribute to projects relating to developing inclusive pedagogies and student engagement.

Dr Amira Elasra

Assistant Professor (Teaching Focused), Economics

As an Assistant Professor of Economics and a Fellow at WIHEA, I am dedicated to innovating and enhancing teaching methods to improve student learning outcomes. My focus is on developing strategies to equip students with essential employability skills for their future careers and providing comprehensive pastoral support to ensure their overall well-being and academic success. Additionally, I am passionate about fostering a welcoming environment and integrating international students into university life, ensuring they have a fulfilling and enriching experience. As a WIHEA Fellow, I aim to implement and share innovative teaching practices, promote programs that build critical employability skills, and advocate for initiatives that support the integration and success of international students within our community.

Craig Franklin

Senior Policy Adviser (Education), Education Policy and Quality

I bring expertise in educational policy, quality, and the enhancement of student experience through delivery of institutional projects focused on Warwick’s developing strategic direction for Education. As we work to maximise the impact of how we plan, resource, and execute strategy implementation over the coming years, I hope to contribute to WIHEA initiatives and support alignment with wider university strategy to support success.

Dr Laura Gelhaus

Assistant Professor (Teaching Focused), PAIS

As a teaching-focused academic working primarily with students in our Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) programme, I am passionate about interdisciplinary learning in joint degrees. Hence, I would like to use my WIHEA fellowship to progress my work at the intersection of pedagogical debates on co-creation, students as researchers, and academic literacies – and how to rethink them for interdisciplinary contexts.

Dr Nalita James

Associate Professor (Reader)/ Director of Academic Studies, Centre for Lifelong Learning

As a WIHEA Fellow, I am keen to utilise my expertise in lifelong learning to inform institutional deliberations on mature students' access and experiences of a Warwick education linked to teaching and learning and contribute to the University’s Education and Experience Strategy that recognises the need to diversify the student body, and provide a Warwick Education that champions both lifelong learning and an inclusive learning environment.

Rebecca Johnson

Associate Professor (Teaching Focused), Warwick Medical School

I am an Associate Professor in Health Services Research Education, Deputy Course Director in Advanced Clinical Practice and module co-lead in Healthcare Leadership at Warwick Medical School. My teaching and learning interests focus on developing creative ways to engage students, scaffolding learning on students’ in-built strengths, and challenging learning thresholds. I have a keen interest in developing pedagogy around research methods and I am member of the National Centre for Research Methods Pedagogy Network. I hope to forge new and challenging ways of bridging the divide between research and teaching cultures through cross-pollination of ideas through WIHEA learning circles and engagement.

Daniel Jones

Assistant Professor (Teaching Focused), Applied Linguistics

I am a Director of Studies for Short Courses in Applied Linguistics, where we welcome students and teachers from around the world to study on language, academic skills and professional development programmes. I am interested in adapting pedagogies for multilingual settings and internationalisation in the curriculum. I hope to collaborate on projects that promote parity of experience for international students.

Dr Mouzayian Khalil

Assistant Professor (Teaching Focused), PAIS

I convene undergraduate modules on gender and development, race and international politics, and the core module of the MA in International Development. During my fellowship I want to explore curriculum and assessment (re)design for tackling epistemic inequities, barriers to knowledge production, transfer and exchange in HE teaching and learning experiences.

Puja Laporte

Programme Manager, Student Discipline and Resolution

I focus on developing education and awareness activities for students around conduct and behaviour, including Active Bystander training. As an incoming Fellow, I am excited to contribute to projects that enhance the student experience and centre co-creation. Additionally, I hope to explore projects related to student conduct, such as the role of AI, anti-racism, and trauma-informed practices.

Yanyan Li

PhD in Applied Linguistics, Applied Linguistics

I’m Yanyan. I am currently doing my PhD in Applied Linguistics. My research resolves around multimodal communication and group interaction. I teach seminars and workshops, design course materials, and supervise dissertations for MA TESOL programme. I also facilitate interdisciplinary courses and training for some STEM departments. I have been engaged in constructing and disseminating actionable knowledge and practices throughout my teaching and research activities at Warwick. As a WIHEA Fellow, I would like to get involved in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teaching, learning and research opportunities. I look forward to connecting with other WIHEA fellows to foster interdisciplinary dialogues and collaboration.

Linta Nasim

Medicine (MBChB) Student, WMS

My expertise lies in developing educational practices that advance equity, diversity, inclusion and justice in medical education. My involvement in student societies and as Secretary of the MBChB SSLC has enabled me to ensure the voices of minority students are heard. I am honoured to be nominated as a WIHEA Fellow and look forward to contributing, learning and networking with others on EDI and anti-racist pedagogy.

Dr Anthony Olomolaiye

Associate Professor (Teaching Focused) in Project Management, WMG

I am an Associate Professor in Project Management who has successfully mentored and produced exceptional Project Managers who are now contributing to various companies globally. Throughout my career, I have undertaken challenging roles in the industry, leveraging my ability to manage diverse and groundbreaking projects, adapt quickly, find effective solutions, and maintain a positive attitude. As part of my Fellowship, I am eager to gain new insights into working in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and contribute my expertise to delivering student-centred learning.

Dr David Orrego-Carmona

Associate Professor, SMLC

My teaching and research explore the relationship between translation and language technologies, including AI, and the professional realities of the language industries. I am interested in enhancing student experience and providing students with the skills, tools and knowledge to tailor sustainable and successful careers. I strongly believe that integrating translation, intercultural and transcultural skills across our programmes will help us foster critical, relevant and employable skills in our graduates. I look forward to becoming part of the WIHEA community and integrating into a wider network to identify like-minded colleagues who are passionate about strengthening the professional training opportunities available for undergraduate and PGT students.

Marion Patel

Warwick Award Manager, Student Opportunity

As Placement Officer, I have responsibility for increasing support, access and confidence around placements and employability in SLS.

Currently co-leading on a project exploring work place and study skills gaps, I am excited to engage through the WIHEA community around inclusive and authentic skills development within and outside curriculum, and value and access of work-based learning.

Dhavni Patil

Liberal Arts Student, Liberal Arts

My experience as a neurodivergent and international student strongly motivates my interest in improving accessibility and equality of experience and opportunities within the university. During my Fellowship I hope to contribute to important discussions centred around inclusivity in higher education, and I wish to widen my own understanding of what an accessible learning space looks like.

 

Dr Andre Pires da Silva

Associate Professor (Reader), School of Life Sciences

I have experience in integrating artificial intelligence into education, curriculum development, and assessment. As a fellow, I aim to influence the strategic direction of the University of Warwick in further incorporating AI into education.

Pawel Plonka

Politics and International Studies Student, PAIS

I am a 3rd-year student of Politics and International Studies interested in exploring the internationalisation of higher education, interdisciplinarity, and good practices for managing artificial intelligence at the university level. Throughout my studies, I have been involved in both staff-led and student-led projects bridging diverse visions for higher education, which have equipped me with a wide range of perspectives. I have been actively engaged in discussions on these topics, gaining experience at organisations such as the British Academy, Warwick Think Tank, and European Guanxi. I look forward to joining learning circles in the above-mentioned areas and co-creating innovative and impactful projects that foster an inclusive and dynamic community with other fellows.

Dr Mark Pulsford

DUGS and Faculty Senior Tutor, Education Studies

I am the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Education Studies where I have worked on module and programme development, including advancing our assessment and feedback approaches. I am also the Faculty Senior Tutor for Social Sciences within the Dean of Students Office. Working with colleagues across departments has highlighted how well students' academic welfare is supported throughout the university, but also how important it is to share those practices more widely. For that reason, I am pleased that my recent inclusive education project about Reasonable Adjustments has instigated the launch of the 'Warwick Disability Champions network'. I hope that with this WIHEA Fellowship I can help implement inclusive education approaches founded on understanding students' experiences of university.

Alisha Rodgers

PhD in Engineering, Engineering

I am a doctoral candidate based in the School of Engineering, having previously completed my undergraduate studies in Systems Engineering at Warwick. My doctorate work primarily focuses on understanding ethnicity degree awarding gaps through the lens of student experiences utilising both quantitative and qualitative research techniques.

As an incoming WIHEA student fellow, I look forward to broadening my networks and learning about the educational-related works being undertaken by WIHEA, as well as contributing my own expertise as a postgraduate researcher and former undergraduate student.

Sanchia Rodrigues

Assistant Professor (Teaching Focused), Warwick Foundation Studies

As a teacher/researcher of English for Academic Purposes (EAP), I am interested in decolonising language education, policy and practice. In particular, I would like to investigate how our institutional commitments to decolonisation, anti-racism and inclusivity are maintained and/or transformed as we adapt to changes in the landscape of academic literacies (e.g.: GenAI).

Dr Charlotte Stevens

Assistant Professor (Teaching Focused) (Digital Education), Academic Development Centre

I am excited to be bringing my experience of digital pedagogy and practice to the WIHEA fellowship, along with knowledge and expertise in evaluation and evidencing impact. As a creative, I also look forward to influencing others to recognise the value of arts-based methodologies and approaches in teaching and learning.

Dr Nick Tawn

Associate Professor (Teaching Focused), Statistics

I am a teaching-focussed Associate Professor in the Statistics with one of my main roles being the Director of Student Experience. I am passionate about understanding and reversing the worrying trends in student disengagement. I’ve already started introducing a suite of support schemes to counter these trends and to increase student resilience; I hope to develop these further while learning from others in WIHEA.

Millie Tissut

Senior Careers Consultant, Student Opportunity

An experienced and professionally qualified careers consultant, I have worked closely with students to consistently deliver high-quality, impartial advice and guidance to students, empowering them to achieve their full potential. By collaborating on projects with colleagues from across the university I hope to learn from them and enhance student engagement and learning. I am particularly interested in collaborating with colleagues across the university to address any disparities in educational attainment across widening participation students – and to promote inclusivity and increase opportunities for all Warwick students.

Paul Trimmer

Educational Technologies Specialist, FOLD/Digital Learning

I have over 30 years of experience in the Warwick way, and a working lifetime of supporting people across the academic spectrum. Now, as an Educational Technologist working in Digital Learning, my role is about taking educational requirements, developing them, and making them happen in the real or digital world. My recent focus has been on innovative learning spaces, working with IDG colleagues to set up green screen video and podcasting studios.

Dr Emily Unwin

Associate Professor (Teaching Focused), Warwick Medical School

I am an enthusiastic and innovative medical educator at WMS, where I lead the development of faculty teaching for the final two clinical years of the MBChB course.

I am passionate about advancing the profile of teaching in Higher Education and promoting collaboration between academics, regardless of contract focus, and I champion teaching through my role as Deputy Director and Education Lead for Warwick Applied Health.

I look forward to collaborating with and learning from colleagues across WIHEA.

Vivek Venkatram (Fellowship extension)

Philosophy, Politics and Economics Student, Philosophy

The Fellowship community has allowed me to directly impact the student experience. As a Student Project Officer, I worked on a university-wide project to embed digital skills throughout the learning cycle. Over the next academic year, I look forward to supporting the implementation of this project to make university-wide learning more engaging and applicable to the real-world.

Through my extended Fellowship, I also hope to drive awareness of the link between alternative proteins, food security, and climate change – alongside widening educational opportunities for our university community to learn more!

Dr Helena Verrill

Assistant Professor (Teaching Focused), Mathematics

I'm a teaching fellow and outreach and WP lead in mathematics. In the Autumn I will be teaching public engagement in mathematics, a new module designed as a student cocreation project.
I enjoy sharing the fun and beauty of mathematics, with both undergraduates and the general public, using puzzles, art work, etc. I'm interested in looking into ways to improve mathematics teaching.

Yvette Yitong Wang

PhD in ELT and Applied Linguistics, Applied Linguistics

My research focuses on teacher development relating to intercultural pedagogy. I have worked as a PGR teacher champion in the Warwick PGR Teaching Community and organized GTA professional development activities. As part of my fellowship, I aspire to continue my work in GTA development and utilize my academic expertise to enhance GTAs’ understanding of intercultural aspects of teaching in multicultural and internationalised higher education. Dr Zi Wang

Internationalisation Co-Ordinator, Student Opportunity

I work as Internationalisation Coordinator in Student Opportunity. In my role, I run Warwick’s intercultural training programme and conduct internationalisation-related education research projects. I hold a PhD degree in English Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics and specialise in language learning and multilingual education. As a WIHEA fellow, I hope to participate in projects that support international students and promote intercultural learning.

Dr Greg Watson

Assistant Professor (Teaching Focused), Computer Science

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, with a background in machine learning, data analytics and computer vision. Within WIHEA’s Inclusive Assessment Learning Circle, I am currently working on analysing the inclusivity of assessment in the SEM faculty. As a WIHEA Fellow, I am looking forward to exploring different approaches to student learning and assessment, and investigating how university education can evolve to utilise the latest AI technologies.

Meifang Zhuo

PhD in ELT and Applied Linguistics, Applied Linguistics

I am excited to be a fellow and more than ready to be engaged in various WIHEA activities and projects, particularly in the aspects of compassionate pedagogy, interdisciplinarity, internationalisation and AI in education. For me, quality of education matters but quality of life in education matters more. As a WIHEA fellow, I aspire to be part of the joint efforts to enhance quality of life in education at Warwick. I will bring along insights I have gained about teaching and learning from my roles as a Senior GTA, a member of Warwick PTC, a library student partner and a PhD life Blogger, and my past experiences in WIHEA and IATL projects.
