The IAS Early Career Fellowship Scheme is OPEN for Applications! 

The Early Career Fellowship offers completing Warwick PhD candidates support and training to build an independent academic career.  

The deadline for this call is 5pm 10 December 2024 for candidates who will submit their thesis for examination between 1 October 2024 and 30 April 2025, with Fellowships commencing April 2025. 
 

IAS Visiting Fellowships scheme is closing tomorrow!

The IAS Visiting Fellowships scheme is now open for applications.  The call will close on 5pm on Thursday 7th November 2024 and this call is for visits which will start between 1st March 2025 and 28th February 2026. 

These fellowships aim to create substantial links with academics and other high-profile figures from around the globe in order to develop new interdisciplinary research ideas and to enrich the academic life of the University for both staff and students. Fellows are expected participate in academic life at Warwick through a mixture of in person and remotely delivered activities 

Fellows will be hosted by their nominator and will be expected to undertake a programme of research and teaching activities which engage across departments and disciplines. The visiting fellow will also be expected to spend time in the IAS to present their work to our interdisciplinary mix of fellows and engage with our Early Career Researcher community. 

Applications should be led and submitted by a nominator at Warwick who must be a permanent Warwick academic staff member (including probationary staff) or holder of a fellowship awarded by an external funder (the duration of which extends beyond the proposed activity).  Applications involving Co-applicants that bridge across departments are particularly welcomed. 

IAS Events

The IAS was thrilled to host the EUTOPIA-SIF Global Kick-off 2024 at the Warwick Venice Centre. We welcomed 38 Marie Skłodowska-Curie (EUTOPIA-SIF COFUND) fellows from six different institutions within the EUTOPIA Alliance to Venice, celebrating the arrival of the fourth cohort of the EUTOPIA-SIF Postdoctoral Fellowship programme.

Prof. George Christou, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor Europe, opened the event, followed by a welcome presentation from Prof Yann Giraud, EUTOPIA-SIF Programme director.

The EUTOPIA-SIF Fellows participated in three days of training at the Warwick Venice Centre, facilitated by experts from Università Ca' Foscari, the University of Ljubljana, and the University of Warwick.

We wish all the new EUTOPIA-SIF Fellows in the EUTOPIA Alliance the best of luck for their fellowships. We look forward to welcoming those who will be working at Warwick for their fellowships or secondments.

InReach10x: 

On Thursday, October 17th, the IAS was pleased to welcome Maurizio Bussolo from the World Bank for the inaugural InReach10x Seminar of the 2024/2025 academic year. Maurizio, a Warwick alumnus who earned his PhD in the Economics department, delivered a presentation titled "Women, Jobs, and Growth—South Asia Development." The talk was highly insightful, and the event was very well received by those in attendance
The next InReach10x talk will be given by Professor Matthew Clayton on Wednesday 13th of November. Professor Clayton will be giving a talk on his forthcoming book, Independence for Children, for more information please visit the InReach10x website
 
 
 
Knowledge production in the 'Arab-majority' world and unlearning in the field: Toward alternative research politics with Ali Kassem

This paper presents and autoethnographically analyses three key sites in which the author—a Lebanese ‘Arabo-Muslim man’ failed to interpellate the lifeworlds of Lebanese ‘Arabo-Muslim’ female participants during a research project in Lebanon: the public-private divide, gender, and the autonomous subject. Specifically, the article identifies key forces that produce this failure, including education, presence in the Westernised university, Westernised secularisation, social class, family background, and urbanity, all situated within the larger structures of modernity/coloniality. Doing this, the article grates against the assumption that researchers who share a ‘race’, citizenship, language, or ethnicity and who are ‘from’ the Arab region are de facto well placed to pursue decolonial knowledge production alongside the region and its dwellers. The article consequently posits the possibility of unlearning and relearning – disrupting this failure – through immersive embodied listening fieldwork within the material space of the Arab world, undoing the formation of an alienated, fractured, Westernised self. Moving beyond the cognitive and theoretical to the material, experiential, and embodied, the article accordingly underlines reflexive listening fieldwork’s potential as a generative site (among others) from which alternative knowledges of/with/on the global South(s) can emerge.

Decoloniality in the midst of genocide with Muhannad Ayyash

This presentation situates Palestine at the heart of the decolonial struggle against the project of colonial modernity. Since the onset of Israel’s latest genocidal operation against the Palestinian people, many academic institutions, research centers/institutes, and academics/reserachers who claim to be anti-racist and anti-colonial have remained silent or have actively supported the genocide. Hiding behind vacuous ideas and arguments about ‘complexity’, ‘nuance’, and ‘civility’, the mainstream of academia has shown itself to be an imposter, claiming to be anti-racist and anti-colonial while continuing to be deeply embedded in the knowledge/power matrix of colonial modernity. After outlining the general contours of decoloniality in Palestine and how that contributes, and is central, to the global project of decoloniality, the presentation explores how we, as decolonial scholars and activists, can rid ourselves of the imposter within us, and emphasises the importance of ridding the global project of decoloniality of the imposters amongst us.

IAS Early Career Fellow,   Dr Elena Mylona, is delivering an online workshop "Introduction to Time Use Research" on behalf of the Centre for Time Use Research, UCL. The event takes place at 10:00 - 14:00 on the 21st and 22nd of November 2024. Register here!
 

  • Dr. Thomas Bilterys (EUTOPIA-SIF Marie Curie Fellow) is leading a new study at the Warwick Sleep and Pain Lab investigating the feasibility of an adapted online approach to improve sleep in people with chronic pain. The study explores a 6-week online intervention program combining online modules and online therapist-guided sessions to assess its potential impact on sleep and pain management. The Warwick Sleep and Pain Lab is currently recruiting participants with persistent pain and sleep difficulties to take part in the project.

  • Dr. Bilterys also attended Sleep 2024 in Seville and presented his study that he carried out as part of his PhD (implementation of CBT-I in chronic pain management) and a study at Warwick (predictors of quality of life in people with chronic pain).

 

Wild Warwick
Dr Ian Farnell (IAS Associate Fellow) is collaborating with the university's Sustainability team to organise Wild Warwick, an exhibition celebrating nature across campus. Staff and students are invited to contribute artwork for this event - please follow the link for more details. The exhibition will run in the FAB Agora from Monday 6th to Friday 24th January, and is kindly supported by IAS and SCAPVC.
 

Dr Andreana Pastena (EUTOPIA-SIF Marie Curie Fellow)  is organising an event called Addressing gender stereotypes in STEM and language: Towards new educational approaches on Thursday 12th December 2024, 10am - 4pm at the Institute of Advanced Study, Zeeman building, University of Warwick

This one-day interdisciplinary symposium aims to foster dialogue on gender roles and stereotypes in STEM and language while presenting potential educational tools and strategies to address these issues.
In the morning session, three guest speakers from various departments at Warwick University will provide diverse perspectives, covering topics such as education, institutional strategies, and AI. Following their presentations, we will introduce a pedagogical intervention we have developed for secondary school students in Italy including the LaleoLab board game. After an informal networking lunch, we will engage in a guided discussion about the challenges and benefits of translating and adapting the game into English, with the aim of forming a working group for those interested in collaborating.

Thirtieth Issue Arrives
I am naturally delighted to announce the latest issue of Exchanges: The Interdisciplinary Research Journal was published at the end of October (Vol 12.1). This marks the third issue in as many months and caps off what has been a frantically busy half year for the journal. This thirtieth issue is one of our regular editions containing a collection of articles from across the disciplinary spectrum, from scholars at Warwick and around the world. Topics tackled this issue include: literary multilingualism, public engagement, publication strategies, research culture, professional identity, interdisciplinary researchers, professional development, resistance and imagination. Alongside this, the Editor-in-Chief’s editorial briefly introduces the issue  as well as updating readers on other forthcoming issues, and opportunities to contribute to future issues.

Primarily run by and for early-career researchers (post-docs and some PGRs), it attracts articles from around the world which are read by an international and cross-disciplinary audience.
