WIHEA Masterclass: Ukraine’s Playbook for Responsible AI in Higher Education: Soft Law in Action
EVENT SUMMARY
IAS Visiting Professor Dmytro Chumachenko is visiting Warwick from 7 to 28 January and we are delighted to co-host this Masterclass with Warwick Business School, during his visit here.
How do universities govern generative AI when technology moves faster than legislation? Drawing on Ukraine’s experience, this session explores how “soft law” (guidelines, recommendations, institutional policies, and course-level rules) can translate responsible AI principles into workable everyday practice. This in-person Masterclass will look at what effective soft law should include (clear definitions, disclosure norms, academic integrity processes, privacy and security boundaries, and governance roles) and where institutions commonly go wrong (including over-reliance on AI detection).
MAIN TAKEAWAY/LEARNING OUTCOME
The session ends with a practical, adaptable roadmap for implementing responsible AI in teaching, assessment, and research across diverse university contexts.
