Start-up ecosystem in Indian academia

Speaker profile: Professor Basab Chakraborty is Head of the Rajendra Mishra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship at IIT Kharagpur. Following his PhD in 1998, he spent 14 years in Exide R&D, working with various national and international customers. At IIT Kharagpur, he leads the battery research lab and has delivered collaborative research worth over INR 250 million with the aim of developing affordable and sustainable electrochemical energy storage solutions. He has also supervised 7 PhD students and co-authored >40 journal articles while also serving on national committees, advising on the development of standards and open-source information to accelerate the development of the Indian EV industry. He also serves as Director, Science and Technology Park at IIT Kharagpur, where he has mentored seven tech-based student start-ups, out of which four are successful companies today.

WMG are hosting Professor Basab Chakraborty through the IAS visiting fellowship secured by Dr. Anup Barai and Dr. Anubhav Singh. Prof. Chakraborty will be visiting WMG again and will be staying at Warwick from 24th June to 4th July, 2025.

After the presentation, we will circulate a form to register researchers’ and teachers’ interest in having a dedicated meeting with him during the visit at the end of June for discussing potential collaboration opportunities.
