Families: An evolving concept
An online workshop funded through the Postdoctoral Early Career Fellowship
Thursday 24 March 2022, Institute of Advanced Studies, University of Warwick
Introduction
This is a workshop which will focus on exploring ways in which scholars across disciplines have tried to conceptualize families and how these conceptualisations have led to different methodological frameworks and research designs.
The key speaker for this workshop, Dr. Patricia HamiltonLink opens in a new window, is a Marie Curie Research Fellow in the Thomas Coram Research Unit, Social Research Institute. Her current project examines the development of parenting leave policies in the UK from the perspective of black families, drawing on interviews and discursive analyses of policy documents since the 1970s.
Patricia has taught in South Africa (at the University of the Witwatersrand and Stellenbosch University) and Canada and presented her work at conferences in Canada, Ireland and the UK. Her work has been published in Qualitative Research and Ethnic & Racial Studies. Her book, Black Mothers and Attachment Parenting: A Black Feminist Analysis of Intensive Mothering in Britain and Canada (Bristol University Press) was published in December 2020. In 2021, her book was nominated for the Philip Abrams Memorial Prize by the British Sociological Association. In September 2022, Patricia will join the University of York’s department of Sociology.
After a brief keynote address by Dr. Patricia Hamilton, the second half of the workshop is a panel discussing the following questions:
- How are our research/practical experience linked with family studies?
- Challenges in theoretically conceptualizing families across the world (and across disciplines)
- Challenges in our research practices
- New/Emerging theoretical and methodological frameworks to understand families
This workshop will contribute to international and inter-disciplinary scholarship on families. At the conclusion of this workshop, we will put together a network of academicians across disciplines who are interested in studying families.
