This salon aims to connect researchers at the University of Warwick who currently work on, or are interested in working on, the topics of (i) doctoral education and (ii) the academic profession.

This covers:

  • any research where doctoral education and/or doctoral students are the focus or study participants
  • any research where academics (i.e. those working in teaching and/or research in Higher Education) are the focus or the participants

Possible topics may include – academic careers and pipelines, policy on doctoral education or academics, academic mobility, social inclusion of doctoral students and academics, the health and wellbeing of doctoral students and academics, the role of academics in society, history of academia, literature or media representations of academia, researcher development, doctoral and post-doctoral training, precarity in academic work, researchers’ experiences in various disciplinary contexts (e.g. in STEM disciplines), academic leadership, knowledge production.

Invited to the salon are academics, post-doctoral fellows, doctoral researchers and professional services staff who are working on the above issues. Researchers funded by the Enhancing Research Culture Fund (ERCF) working on relevant projects are warmly invited. The event welcomes those who are already working in or planning to develop new work in this area.

The event will feed into a Research Centre application to the University led by Dr Henderson and Dr Burford from DES (Department of Education Studies). There will be no obligation to join the centre from the event; the event has the aim of mapping these interests in order to establish the scope of the centre. Attendees will be offered the opportunity of staying in touch about the centre developments and being named as potential centre members/affiliates on the application.
