Registration now open for: 'Making Sense of Diversity in a University Education'

12-3pm | 6th November 2013 | Senate House Council Chamber

The event, hosted by IATL, will cover the life cycle of Widening Participation from outreach, through retention, to progression, with a particular focus on retention and more specifically on what we do at Warwick to ensure that our practices are open to and beneficial to all students from all backgrounds.

The event will begin with lunch and will be introduced by Christina Hughes, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education (Innovation, Employability and Widening Participation).

The article notes that the module Forms of Identity, convened by IATL's Nick Monk, is taught via video conferencing to students at both Warwick and Monash.

IGGY Heron Scholarship in Science & Arts: winner annouced

After careful consideration from IATL's Jonny Heron, who sponsored the scholarship, it was awarded to Aaiz Khan, a 17 year old student from Pakistan. Aaiz combined two of his passions, biology and music, and devised a way of teaching and learning genetics through basic guitar string theory. Aaiz's project was playfully titled 'Genes on a String'.

Tree Carols

Calling all student poets and lyricists

The Coull Quartet and IATL are looking for six student poet/lyricists to collaborate with six composers from Birmingham conservatoire to take part in Tree Carols.

A writing/ composing project inspired by the night to create miniature nocturnes for baritone or soprano and string quartet.

To be performed in a late night concert on 05 March 2014 by internationally acclaimed resident ensemble the Coull Quartet, and singers from the University of Warwick and Birmingham Conservatoire.

As part of the project you will take part in two workshops where you will be guided by eminent composer Joe Cutler and award winning writer Martin Riley.

Paid Student Work Opportunity

Are you thinking of working during term-time?

Are you looking for part-time hours to suit your timetable?

IATL is looking to recruit a number of Classroom Stewards to support the use of the following teaching spaces; the CAPITAL Rehearsal Room in Millburn House, the Reinvention Centre and the Avon Drama Studio at Westwood, the Humanities Studio and the eight newly refurbished teaching rooms in the Ramphal Building.

Classroom Stewards will be recruited to work in weeks 1-10 of the autumn term, 1-10 of the spring term and weeks 1-4 of the summer term.

We are looking for two Classroom Stewards to work from 8:00-10:00am, Monday-Friday in each week during term time.

We are also looking for an additional six Classroom Stewards to work as required (and as available) during teaching hours (9:00-19:00, Monday-Friday), throughout term time.

All Classroom Stewards will be paid at the rate of £7.85 per hour.

New issue of Reinvention: an International Journal of Undergraduate Research

The British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) 2013 Special Issue was published on 5 August, featuring a selection of 13 conference papers from BCUR 2013 and from the inaugural Monash-Warwick International Conference of Undergraduate Research (ICUR). This issue was the first under the journal's new Managing Editor, Emma Barker, and we also have four new Assistant Editors: John Watkins, Md. Roysul Islam, Jennifer Entwisle and Tim Ziegler. Welcome to all!

IGGY Heron Scholarship in Science & Arts

IATL's own Jonathan Heron invites applications for the first IGGY Heron Scholarship in Science & Arts, which will provide an award of free annual membership to IGGY. The scholarship is open to 13-18 year olds who are not currently a member of IGGY.

Applicants will need to identify an aspect of physics or biology that they feel could be taught through the performing arts. The closing date is Friday 30 August 2013.

Paid Student Research Opportunity

Are you looking for part-time work during the summer term?

IATL is looking for two Student Research Assistants to analyse the results of our survey of student engagement at the University.

Each Research Assistant will be employed for 68 hours' work, between 15 July and 30 September, at the rate of £12.47 per hour, with the majority of the analysis work to be carried out in July.

You will be a second-, third- or fourth-year undergraduate with an interest in the social science of teaching and learning, competent in statistical methods, with experience of using SPSS or similar, and some experience of research.

The closing date for applications is midday on Wednesday 10 July.

Interviews will be held in the afternoon of Friday 12 July.

Successful candidates should be available to start work on Monday 15 July.
