New IATL Director announced

Dr Jonathan Heron, currently our Deputy Director and Principal Teaching Fellow, is to become Director of IATL for an initial term of three years. He was a founding member of IATL in 2010, following appointment to the university in 2007. We would also like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Dr Nicholas Monk, who will step down as Director later this year (see his newsletter editorial).

Warwick student wins Posters in Parliament

Two Warwick students, Mike Hopper and James Blake, were selected to attend Posters in Parliament on 20 February 2018. The calibre of research on display by undergraduates from around the UK was exceptional and we are pleased to announce that James was selected by the panel of judges as the overall winner for his poster ‘Modelling panspermia in the TRAPPIST-1 system’.

IATL’s Elena Riva promoted to Senior Teaching Fellow

Congratulations to Elena Riva, who is now IATL Senior Teaching Fellow. Elena is Director of Undergraduate Studies for IATL, convenes the undergraduate module ‘Genetics: Science and Society’ and the postgraduate module ‘Thinking Water’, and is currently leading the research project 'Improving students' wellbeing in the teaching and learning environment'.

Launch of student research webpages funded by WIHEA

Colleagues from IATL, Student Careers and Skills and the Law School recently received WIHEA funding to bring together information about student research opportunities around the University. An institutional review was conducted and a student research hub on MyWarwick was created. The hub covers what research is, the benefits of getting involved, the opportunities available, and will soon be linked to opportunities within departments.

WIHEA Fellowships for IATL Academic Managers

IATL Academic Managers Jo Wale and Caroline Gibson are delighted to have been made WIHEA Fellows for 2017-2020. The role involves working with colleagues university-wide, helping embed good practice in learning and teaching and feeding into strategic projects. Caroline will be leading the WIHEA Internationalisation Learning Circle and would like to hear from other WIHEA Fellows interested in joining the group.

HEA Senior Fellowships for IATL Deputy Director and IATL Teaching Fellow

IATL away day

The IATL team held a productive and enjoyable day at the Cryfield Sports Pavilion in July. Taking the opportunity of time away from the office, the team met to discuss what they enjoy about IATL's work and the challenges of working as a busy team, before focusing on the ways in which IATL can help to drive forward the University’s education strategy now and in the future.

IATL Associate Tutor wins unprecedented second WATE PGR

Congratulations to Phil Gaydon, who has won an unprecedented second Warwick Award for Teaching Excellence (WATE) PGR. This represents a fitting end to his time with IATL, where he has been a great asset to the team; as announced in May, he is to be Teacher of Philosophy at St Paul’s School in London and we wish him every success in this new role.
