Creation 2.0

In this project, we will be working towards a rehearsed reading of 'Creation 2.0', a new play by first-time playwright and honourary professor of mathematics at the University of Warwick, Jeremy Gray. The rehearsal period will run throughout the first half of term 3, with a performance later in the term. As it will be a rehearsed reading, the cast will be using their scripts during the performance, but the play will otherwise be fully staged with relevant costume, set, and technical support. This is a rare opportunity to work in collaboration with a member of academic staff on a new piece of writing, with the aim of the rehearsal and performance process being to help Jeremy adapt his script. For some of the team involved, this will be their first opportunity to work with a new piece of writing, and every member of the cast will be encouraged to contribute and give feedback throughout the process. The play itself, 'Creation 2.0', explores the age-old dispute between science and religion. Throughout history, science and religion have often been in disagreement - take Copernicus and his heliocentric model of the solar system, for example - in a modern setting, the play explores the field of genetic modification, which has become a prominent focus of scientific research in the 21st century. The play questions the moral implications of being able to cure genetic disorders before birth, and we get to witness what happens when this top secret research finds its way into the wrong hands.
