Space and Place: Structure, Geography and Teaching & Learning

The Dark Would On 14 & 15 May 2015, The Dark Would team organised an IATL event which explored innovation in pedagogy, learning, and teaching in Higher Education. Participants were invited to question what they needed in order to develop their pedagogical skills, ideas, and philosophies and were asked to consider what it is that turns the spaces within a university into places for learning which hold meaning and value. Feedback from participants was used to create three short films, each focussed arround the reoccuring themes of Structure, Geography and Teaching & Learning.

The Ensemble Review

Ensemble ReviewOver the course of a year and a sustained period of analysis, the (PDF Document) Ensemble Review developed an evaluation of inter/trans-disciplinary projects and an audit of the current membership and alumni of the IATL Student Ensemble. The review also reflected upon the journey from the Fail Better residency (2008) to the FellSwoop project (2013), across five years of work. In the true spirit of the Ensemble, the review was a co-authored and multi-vocal response, and whilst it is necessarily a work-in-progress as the Ensemble continues to evolve and flourish, it documents the group’s identity in 2014.


Building Bridges for Education for Sustainability

This report, by Dr Ria Dunkley, presents findings from a research project that focused on the potential to expand Education for Sustainability (EfS) related activities at Monash and Warwick Universities, through the Monash-Warwick Alliance. The report is informed by interviews with university stakeholders, including academics, support staff, senior management and students. Findings are placed within a wider context through a review of the current EfS literature.


Quality Teaching Spaces: The Refurbishment of the Ramphal Building 2012

In November 2011 IATL and the Space Management and Timetabling Team were awarded £1,000,000 from the University's Capital Investment Fund (CIF) to refurbish teaching rooms in the Ramphal building. A research project to evaluate the success of the refurbishment was carried out in January-March 2013; follow the link above for the report.

HE STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)

IATL was funded to conduct three HE STEM projects:

  1. SME Too: How can HEIs and SMEs interact more effectively? - Completed July 2012
    - In collaboration with the Centre for Student Careers and Skills, University of Warwick
    A team of four undergraduate researchers, led by a project research officer from IATL, investigated interactions between HEIs and SMEs in STEM subjects, surveying and interviewing students, academics and SMEs.
  2. Real World STEM - Completed July 2012
    - In collaboration with the Centre for Student Careers and Skills, University of Warwick
    Using scenario-based learning to ensure graduates are prepared for, and oriented towards, working in STEM Careers.
  3. Developing Business Skills Resources for HE Chemists
    - In Collaboration with the University of York
    To develop 10-credits of material aimed at level-3 chemistry undergraduates. The format of the materials will be highly modular so that shorter, bespoke courses can be built to facilitate implementation across a range of institutions. The materials are designed to complement students' industrial research experiences and expose students to more commercial aspects.

Open-space Learning in Real World Contexts

This project, funded by the Higher Education Academy's National Teaching Fellowship Scheme, brought together three National Teaching Fellows, from Education, Creative Writing and E-Learning at the CAPITAL Centre (Creativity and Performance in Teaching and Learning), to develop and embed new forms of creative pedagogy associated with workshop practice and collaborative learning in flexible teaching spaces. See the video about Open-space Learning at the CAPITAL Centre, which grew into the HEA-funded project. From summer 2010, the project was hosted by IATL and was completed in July 2011.

RSA Academy Tipton Projects

The University of Warwick has a strategic partnership with RSA Academy Tipton. As part of that relationship IATL developed two projects. The first, 'Re-Opening Minds', explored the academy's unique curriculum design, whilst the second project, 'Opening Spaces', explored the variety of teaching spaces at the academy and the potential for innovative pedagogies to be employed in those spaces. These projects were comploeted in July 2011.

A HEFCE-funded project conducted by King's College London, with the University of Warwick, which aimed to explore graduate capabilities developed in the teaching and learning practices at two Russell Group universities with the intended outcome being a 'blueprint' for research-led teaching to inform policy in other HE institutions.

Re-Performing Performance: Shakespeare archives in teaching and learning

This project generated an e-learning resource serving as a record or guide of the pedagogic work of the CAPITAL Centre, with archival material, offering a range of possibilities for using theatre records in a range of performance-based learning experiences. The website offers downloadable introductions to specific collections and critical analysis. A kind of companion project to this, Unpinning Desdemona, sought to answer the research question: can performance offer answers to textual problems?

Spaces and Stories of (Higher) Education: A Historical Investigation

A collaboration between the Reinvention Centre and the HEA History Subject Centre, involving students and staff from History and Sociology at Warwick examining the historical relationships between pedagogy, curriculum and space in Higher Education institutions.#

Sociologists Talking

Online archive of an interactive multi-media exhibition which aimed to address the importance of university pedagogies in seeking to understand and engage critically in the complex moral, social and political questions of contemporary human society.

The Idea of a University

Exhibition created by a collaborative research team of students and staff from Sociology and History at Warwick. A mixed-media installation produced from original archival and interview data in order to map the spatial and historical generation and regeneration of Warwick from the 1960s to the present day. Some material from the exhibition can be seen on the walls of the IATL open area in Senate House.

Students at Work: Learning to Labour in Higher Education

A film researched and made by a team of undergraduate and postgraduate students and administrative and academic staff at Warwick.

Universities PLC? Enterprise in Higher Education

Documentary film about the marketisation of Higher Education made by undergraduate students at Warwick.
