Volunteer Opportunity | Lightyear Foundation
** Volunteering in Lightyear Foundation's Virtual Lab **
We have been shared information from the Lightyear Foundation, a science charity that breaks down barriers to disabled children accessing STEM. They run a programme called the Virtual Lab, which takes place on Zoom and enables disabled young people to enjoy science experiments in a supported and accessible format. They have previously worked with STEM students at other universities and are currently recruiting more volunteers.
The Virtual Lab in an online programme for disabled children and young people who are passionate about science. Each Virtual Lab has 4 sessions, in which the group take part in a different hands-on science experiment together. The young people use equipment that we post to them (including their own lab coat!) and the session is led by our STEM Lead, Dr. Sarah Bearchell on Zoom.
The volunteer role involves:
- Logging into the Lightyear Zoom account and hosting the technical elements of the session. This may include; admitting people from the waiting room, sharing your screen and spotlighting individuals. You will always be supported by the Lightyear team members and never solely responsible for a session. There are always 2 team members minimum on a call. You will be visible on camera. We can help you get to grips with Zoom and the functions you’ll need.
- Offering feedback and observations on students - how they manage with each task, areas for improvement etc.
- Each session lasts max. 45 mins. They sometimes vary in length, but don't go over 45mins. We meet on Zoom 15 mins before each session begins.
- Each Virtual Lab runs for 4 sessions with a cohort of 6 young people. Our upcoming Labs will take place in a school, and we are delivering one session per day for 4 days. They will run Tuesday - Friday, either 10:00 - 10:45 or 1:30 - 2:15.
- You can volunteer for one or multiple sessions. It’s wonderful when one volunteer can commit to a whole Virtual Lab (4 consecutive sessions) as this offers consistency to the students, but it is not essential. If you can only do 1 or 2 sessions, we’d still love to hear from you!
- If you are interested or have any further questions, please get in touch with Rhiannon on rhiannon@lightyearfoundation.org

Library Update from Robin Green, University Librarian
Various Library study spaces remain available and these are managed to make them Covid-safe. Government guidance still states that individuals should stay at home and only leave home if essential. So, if students can work from home they should, but for those that don’t have accommodation that is conducive to study we offer the following: see further details.....
The Rootes Grid, which is available for all Warwick students. The Rootes FlexiGrid (on the 1st Floor) and Panorama Rooms (on the 2nd Floor) are also open as study spaces.
The Postgrad Hub for PG students – in Junction, the old Sports Centre.
For Medical and Life Sciences students, there is the BioMed Grid on Gibbet Hill.
These sites are all open seven days a week – students are advised to visit our Web site for full details.
The Library is continually reviewing the situation and is working with colleagues across campus to open new spaces where we can, based on demand. Students can refer to the Study Space Availability pages on the Web and their MyWarwick app to see what is available and where.
Given social distancing guidelines, these spaces are open for individual study only at the moment, and users need to follow the University’s safe working and sanitising practices. When visiting our sites users MUST:
- wear a face covering (unless they have a medical exemption not to)
- remain 2 metres apart from others, including Library staff
- sanitise their hands.
There is cleaning equipment so our users can clean their workstation.
We take everyone’s safety very seriously and anyone not following these rules will be asked to leave.
£1000 Engineering Competition - Students may want to enter!
A former engineering student now run an engineering design and analysis company.
They are running competitions throughout 2021 to try and get more people involved and inspired in STEM subjects.
The overview of the first challenge is to design and build a Dragster Vehicle that is powered by only 1x AA battery and can travel 10 meters the fastest – the fastest one will be awarded £1000.
The competition is completely remote and all entries will be posted to us and we will record the results and publish them to everyone and announce the winner.
