What if I don't have an MSDS?

Material Safety Data Sheets for existing chemicals and preparations should be available from the manufacturer/supplier. Many can now be downloaded from the web, or can be obtained from various web sites: links to some web sites are given below, although preference should be made to obtaining the one from the supplier/manufacturer of the material. Except for a few research groups it is unlikely that new chemicals or preparations will be made. However, those research groups that make devices or materials supported on substrates (e.g. catalysts and sensors) may be producing novel materials and should consider whether an MSDS is required. As guidance, any novel material that is sent for use by a third party outside the University MUST be accompanied by a MSDS. The Health and Safety Advisor will help to prepare new material safety data sheets where we are preparing a new substance.
