CDT in Negative Emission Technologies for Net Zero
The Net2Zero Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) is a UK wide Centre for Doctoral Training programme focused on advancing Negative Emission Technologies (NETs) — critical innovations required to meet Net Zero targets and tackle climate change.
The CDT promotes close collaboration between academia and industry, equipping the next generation of engineers and scientists with the skills needed to work across disciplines and drive innovation. Its aim is to support the UK’s transition to Net Zero by building a strong, internationally recognised community capable of developing and delivering impactful solutions.
Net2Zero unites leading research expertise from across the UK to speed up the progression and real-world application of NETs. These technologies are designed not only to remove greenhouse gases, but also to generate broader economic, environmental, and societal value. Researchers within the CDT benefit from access to cutting-edge facilities and work on practical challenges associated with implementing NETs at scale.
The CDT is a collaboration between four universities: Aston University (lead institution), University of Warwick, Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Nottingham. Doctoral researchers are typically based at the university of their primary supervisor while engaging with partners across the wider network.
Students contribute to research that builds on the UK’s strengths in science and engineering, focusing on areas such as direct air capture and CO₂ storage, biochar production and applications, the conversion of biomass into materials and chemicals, and bioenergy systems with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).
