Warwick ESMO Satellite Team win top IET Prize
At a recent Engineering Poster Presentation evening promoted by the Institution of Engineering Technology the Warwick ESMO student team were awarded the top prize for technological innovation.
The Warwick team, lead by Dr. Bill Crofts, have been working with approximately twenty of the UK and Europe’s top space technology companies in order to design and build the electrical power supply system for the European Space Agency’s ESMO satellite that is being planned to carry scientific instrumentation into a lunar orbit.
The team were represented by Elizabeth Ace who presented the culmination of six years of work that has successfully passed through a number of rigorous ESA review stages. The work included extensive analysis, modelling, and design of the solar array panels, the electronic circuitry that controls the SA panel output, protection of the supply to all sub-systems, and the rechargeable battery system. It has required a high standard, multidisciplinary team of 4th Yr students who were able to demonstrate the cross-discipline capabilities promoted by the undergraduate engineering degree at Warwick. (see www.esmo.co.uk for team/project details).
