Shear Buckling of Elliptical Hollow Sections
Elliptical hollow sections (EHS) have emerged as a recent addition to the hot-finished product range for tubular construction. The distinctive varying curvature around the section is not only aesthetically appealing but also offers differing flexural rigidities about the two principal axes and high torsional stiffness. This cross-section creates an interesting alternative for engineers and architects in a broad range of design applications. In order to facilitate wider use of elliptical hollow sections, comprehensive structural design rules verified against structural performance data are required. This research aims to investigate the shear buckling response of EHS via sound analytical derivations and non-linear numerical (FE) simulations.
