Student Experience Questionnaire

A Survey of the Factors Affecting Engineering Student Experience

Participant Information and Data Protection

Participation Information
  • You are being invited to take part in research to identify the factors which affect undergraduate engineering student experience at the University of Warwick. This survey is being undertaken by the project researcher, Alisha Rodgers, as part of a PhD.
  • You are invited to participate as you are enrolled on an undergraduate engineering degree.
  • Participation in this survey is completely voluntary. You are free to withdraw at any time whilst completing the survey without the need to give any reason.
  • If you would like to withdraw your responses once you have submitted your answers, please contact t.popham@warwick.ac.uk and j.f.collingwood@warwick.ac.uk. Any aggregate outputs from the data use (such as subsequent publications) cannot be withdrawn.
  • A pilot version of this questionnaire ran in the academic year 2021/22 and 2022/23. The pilot study responses have been important in the initial phase of the research. This updated questionnaire is independent of the pilot, so you are still eligible and invited to participate in this questionnaire if you undertook the pilot.
  • We would like to thank you for your contribution and give you a £5 food and drinks voucher that can be spent at the Rootes Grocery Store and the majority of campus-based cafes. Please provide your email address via a separate link at the end of the questionnaire to claim this voucher. Your email address will be handled separately from the rest of the questionnaire.
Data Collection
  • Your student identification (ID) number will be recorded. This will be used to link your responses to the University databases to obtain information such as assessment marks, but this will be done by a small number of staff who have permission to access these records – your ID number will be visible to these staff members meaning that responses may be identifiable. Thereafter, your student ID number will be removed, so the project researcher will at no stage be able to link your ID to your responses. Your responses will therefore remain anonymous to the project researcher at all times.
  • All survey data will be held under password protection for one year, then archived securely for 10 years before being deleted.
Data Usage
  • Your data will be processed in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) 2016 and the Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Direct quotes provided may be used in the research report but will not contain information that could identify an individual (either the contributor, or the subject of a quote).
  • Any data collected will be used only for the approved purpose of this project.

By continuing, you confirm that you have read and understood the information above, are currently a student taking a BEng, MEng, or BSc degree in the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick, and are aged 18 or over.

Introduction: Purpose of Study

Differences exist in student attainment relating to the protected characteristics defined by the Equality Act 2010. This survey aims to identify why these attainment differences exist as part of a process to improve the engineering education experience at the University of Warwick.

Collection and Use of Student Identification Number

Your responses will remain anonymous to the project researcher.

For the purposes of the research, your student identification (ID) number will be initially recorded. This will be used to link your responses to the University databases so that data can be grouped by recorded protected characteristics (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity) and student attainment records for each cohort.

Your student ID number will be removed and will be replaced with a randomly generated code by staff responsible for the records before the data is provided to the project researcher. This means that your survey responses will be fully anonymous to the researcher.

Please ensure that your student ID number displayed below is correct.

Gender and Ethnicity

The following questions have been included to ensure that the data analysed is reflective of your current status; this may deviate from what is held within Student Records.

i. How would you describe your gender identity?

ii. How would you describe your ethnic background?
