Remote Desktop Simulation Method - Tutorial
1. Consult Mr A. Hume at the back of F211, School of Engineering and setup an account on the Solar computer.
Use University login information.
2. Confirm that VNC is running on the machine.
3. On the remote endpoint (for example, a computer off-campus) install the following two programs:
a) PuTTY, the SSH client.
Found at:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
Ensure the correct installer is downloaded for the operating system in use.
b) VNC, Virtual Network Computing is a piece of remote control software enabling the user to view and interact
with another computer desktop (the VNC server) via the program VNC Viewer.
Found at:
http://www.realvnc.com/products/download.html
The free version is adequate.
4. Open PuTTY and enter the IP address of Solar in the Destination text field.
Solar IP Address: 137.205.144.4
5. Go to the SSH tab, under Connection and left click on Tunnels.
a) Enter “5901” in Source Port
b) Enter “localhost:5901” in Destination
c) Click Add
6. It is worth saving the current PuTTY setup to minimise time, next time login is required
7. Click Open, the black session window will appear, prompting for login details.
Login using the account setup in Step 1!
8. Open VNC on Solar by executing the command “vncserver”
This will confirm that desktop 1 is in utilisation, corresponding to port 5901.
9. Run the program VNC Viewer
10. Use the server information “localhost:1”.
Click OK and login with the same details
11. VNC Viewer will now open the remote desktop display, viewing Solar.
If a red and white command prompt is visible, skip Step 12
12. To open a command prompt in UNIX, go to the PuTTY black session prompt and execute the following:
“setenv DISPLAY solar:1”
“/usr/openwin/bin/xterm &"
13. Execute the command “starccm+” to open CD-Adapco’s Star CCM+.
14. To upload any files to an account on Solar, the advised program is WinSCP
a) WinSCP can be found at:
http://winscp.net/eng/download.php
b) Simply login with the server (Solar) details and account information
c) Drag any desired files to Solar
d) There are also options for directory creation and similar tasks
