Mathematics undergraduate student induction

This page is for the incoming 2025/26 cohort.

Congratulations on obtaining a place at the Mathematics Department here at the University of Warwick! We look forward to welcoming you in September. In the meantime, the pages here will help you understand what you should do before you arrive, and what you will need to do during your first weeks here.

During Welcome Week, the first induction session will be at 10am on Monday 29th September, at lecture theatre MS.02, Zeeman Building (see your emails from the University). Please try to arrive early so we can start promptly.

All of your lectures/classes will be in person/face-to-face, supplemented with various electronic resources. You will be submitting your assessed work online, we will explain how to do this during Welcome Week.

You do not need to register for any modules yet; you can prepare by looking at the available options in the Handbook, but you can wait until you arrive before registering. The first induction session will explain how to choose your modules.

Please note that these pages are for those students about to start on the Maths BSc, MMath, Maths and Business or Maths and Economics degrees. Although some of the information contained may be useful to other students, much of it is specific to how Mathematics students can find help. MORSE and Maths/Stats should go to the Stats department website, Maths/Physics to Physics, Discrete Maths to Computer Science and Maths/Philosophy to Philosophy.

Before Arriving

Before you arrive you may want to do some reading to get you up and running.

From early September, you will be access an online module "MA1K2 Refresher Mathematics"Link opens in a new window (you will need to have registered with the University and set up your online account first. The link won't work until the course starts running! The main aim of this module is to help you get back into the swing of academic study by reviewing A-level maths. However, while the material will be familiar to you, the course will offer you a new way of thinking about it, that will prepare you better for university study. You will also get a taste of university-style lectures, although these will be online for this module. There is a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for this module here which should cover most questions you may have before it opens.

This module is "core" for you and will appear on your registrations, but any assessment will not count as credit towards your degree and is for feedback only, so please don't get stressed by it. Do attempt it though, in our exam boards at the end of the first year the students who have struggled with the course invariably did not attempt this Refresher Module before arriving.

Please save questions about module choices and the maths programme for Welcome Week and not try to get answers from staff teaching the Refresher module.

Schedule for Welcome Week and Week 1

Please keep an eye on your Welcome Week pages, the schedule for all the sessions you should be attending will be found there. Links to session recordings once they have happened should also be available.

The schedule for core lectures once Term has started will appear in your "Tabula" timetable, but a timetable including optional modules will be placed on the front page of the Undergraduate Handbook and also distributed by email. Note that lectures start Monday Week 1 (Monday after Welcome Week). You can also see a full timetable on the University timetabling page. Once there, login if necessary and select Mathematics Institute as department, G100/1,G103/1, GL11/1 or G1NC/1 as programme, then Term 1 and 'View Programme'.

One of the biggest differences that students find in coming from school to University is that you will quickly have to learn to organise your time and be responsible for your own learning. Although there is help out there through your Personal Tutor and Supervisor, there won't be a teacher making sure you're doing what you're supposed to do.

Useful Links:

Due to our high entry requirements, many of you would never have struggled with mathematics. But you will find university mathematics much more challenging, and you will probably not get the kind of marks you used to get in school. This is normal!

Where to ask questions or find answers before arriving?

  • Department Facebook page
  • Warwick Maths Society
  • You will find out who your personal tutor is when Tabula is updated with this information shortly before Term starts. However, please wait until you have had all your induction sessions before emailing them questions.
