Jonathon Mellor

Man sitting in green shirt

I am a PhD student in 2025/26, completing my PhD by Published Works at the University of Warwick Maths department. I work for the UK Health Security Agency as a data scientist, where I lead a team focusing on real-time modelling of infectious diseases. My research interests are primarily using epidemiological surveillance data to improve resource allocation and decision making, often involving forecasting, nowcasting and population level studies.

This year I will be writing up a portfolio on the basis of my prior published work with supervision from Prof Matt Keeling.

Below are the published work I have led or supervised:

  1. Understanding the leading indicators of hospital admissions from COVID-19 across successive waves in the UK

  2. Forecasting influenza hospital admissions within English sub-regions using hierarchical generalised additive models

  3. A comparative study of influenza surveillance systems and administrative data in England during the 2022–2023 season

  4. The Impact of Healthcare Pressures on the COVID-19 Hospitalisation Fatality Risk in England

  5. Assessing the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on influenza-like illness surveillance trends in the community during the 2023/2024 winter in England

  6. An application of nowcasting methods: Cases of norovirus during the winter 2023/2024 in England

  7. Forecasting COVID-19, influenza, and RSV hospitalizations over winter 2023-4 in England

  8. Nowcasting cases and trends during the measles 2023/24 outbreak in England
