What is a European Study Group with Industry?
Study Groups with Industry are an internationally recognised highlight of UK applied mathematics. They have been held annually in the UK for nearly 40 years, and provide a forum for industrialists to work alongside established academic mathematicians, postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students on problems of direct industrial importance. They have forged links that have led to many long-term collaborations.
The success of the Study Groups' unique format, using problems presented by industry as the basis for mathematical research, is shown by the extent to which it has been copied around the world. Study Groups are now also held annually in the USA, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, China and Australia. As Denmark and the Netherlands have embraced the Study Group format, the UK events have become the central component of a wider European series: for example the 2009 UK Study Group at the University of Southampton was the 68th European Study Group with Industry (ESGI).
European collaboration is achieved by the overseas participation in the UK Study Groups, particularly of younger researchers. Many of the most committed UK participants are in demand as invited international experts at Study Group overseas.
Local costs to attend this meeting (accommodation, subsistence, and registration) are expected be covered for UK based academics, however, participants are expected to cover their own travel costs. There are limited funds available to cover some additional accommodation, subsistence, registration, and travel costs for non-UK based academics. If you would like to be considered for such additional funding, please submit a brief case when registering (these funds will be allocated competitively).
Accommodation is in student ensuite accommodation, 10 minutes walk from the Zeeman Building, and a couple of minutes from Rootes Restaurant (where most evening meals will be served), the Student Union, banks and shops. Internet is accessible in all bedrooms (remember to bring an Ethernet cable!). On site parking available.
Conference guests can also use the University's extensive sports facilities including the Sports Centre on main campus. For those of you who fancy a morning run the University Cross Country Club has provided some favourite routes.
