Student perspective

About: student perspective

We thought it might be useful to start with some context. At Warwick Medical School we have been piloting with students the use of iPads in Medical Education since 2017. With grateful thanks to the students who have participated in the years of pilot studies we will share here what we have learnt so far. This underpins the business case for us rolling out iPads to all MB ChB students from 2021 onwards.

There were a number of things about the iPads that students have been in general agreement on:

  • Really useful for support of revision
  • Handy size for clinical situations
  • Feels more professional for looking things up than a phone
  • Preloaded apps useful
  • Feels more focused having a work device
  • Some concerns over losing it!

Student tips

“Take with you on placement. Download relevant books.”

“Make sure you have an offline resource on your iPad that you can use to access information (e.g. pdfs & apps) as the internet access at hospitals can be very hit and miss.”

Student comments

"Having previously used my own devices (laptop, tablet and phone) I feel that providing encrypted iPads for use on the course is an excellent idea, as they are useful not only on the wards but within CBL sessions and for general use when studying."

“Was very useful on placement as if fit in the scrubs pocket and allowed us to search things to aid our learning and made obtaining some sign-offs easier
