Ring-fenced studentships

Abdi Jama

The Warwick MRC DTP in Interdisciplinary Biomedical recognises that significant inequalities and barriers exist in the UK Higher Education System and is committed to taking positive steps to support equality, diversity and inclusion within the DTP.

For this purpose we are offering two ring-fenced studentships for 2023 entry for the following applicants:

One Black British student from any heritage: which may include Black African, Black Caribbean, Black other, or Mixed Black.

One student from a Widening Participation (WP) background: this would be an applicant that meets two of the criteria listed below, unless they are a care leaver.

  • Be from a low participation neighbourhood where the proportion of students going into higher education is low (POLAR 4, quintile 1) or an area which has a high level of deprivation (Index of Multiple Deprivation, IMD], 0-20%).
  • Have completed studies at schools/colleges where performance was below average and eligibility for Free School Meals was higher than average.
  • Have been eligible for and/or in receipt of free school meals during secondary education.
  • Come from a home where parents, stepparents, carers or guardians do not have Higher Education qualifications.
  • Was eligible for both the tuition fee and full maintenance loan during undergraduate studies.
  • Received and/or was entitled to a scholarship or bursary that was means-tested based on family income during undergraduate studies.
  • Participated in a Widening Participation Access programme, such as Realising Opportunities, Pathways or UniTracks.
  • Was classed as a mature student at the start of undergraduate studies (i.e. was aged 21 or over on the first day of the course).
  • Is a carer for an ill or disabled family member.
  • Has experienced significant extenuating circumstances that have had a detrimental effect on academic achievement (e.g. being a young carer, suffered from a long-term illness requiring time out of education, has a disability or specific learning difficulty).
  • Is a care leaver (being a care leaver means having spent a minimum of 13 weeks in local authority care within the last 15 years).

We recognise that significant barriers to postgraduate research study exist for these two groups, and so these positions are here to encourage and enable equal opportunity for students from these underrepresented groups. Our goal is to motivate students that would not have otherwise applied.

Applicants from these groups will be considered as part of the recruitment to all of the available studentships as the academic standards for acceptance are exactly the same.

Applicants wishing to be considered for a ring-fenced studentship must indicate this in the relevant section of the application form and, for students wishing to be considered for a WP studentship, must also complete the section on eligibility criteria.
