Postdoctoral position at Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille

Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille is advertising for a two-year postdoc position related to the preparation of the PLATO mission.

The position is centred on vetting and classification of exoplanet candidates detected in high precision light curves. The successful candidate will have to define a reliable and fast algorithm for the scientific evaluation of the transits that will be detected in light curves such as those expected from PLATO and establish precise specifications for the Exoplanets Analysis System pipeline of the PLATO Data Center. The goal is not only to assess the planetary likelihood of the detected transits using all available information (light curves, centroids, host star parameters, and knowledge of its neighbour, etc.), but also to develop a method for the ranking of the planet candidates, method that will take into account the scientific interest of each candidates (size, orbital period, insolation, etc.) and will aim at providing guidance to subsequent follow-up observations. This will notably involve the use of classical Bayesian methods.

The successful applicant will work with the PLATO team at LAM within the Planetary System group, mostly M. Deleuil, and A. Santerne. They will also collaborate with the PLATO Science Management team, and especially the one in charge of the specifications of the Exoplanets Analysis System.

Applicants are expected to have a solid experience in observation, data reduction, and analysis of high precision photometric data. Good skills in statistics and scientific programming in python are essential.

Deadline for applications is July 15th, 2020. Start time is October 2021 with some flexibility. By the starting date, candidates should have obtained a PhD degree in Astronomy.

To apply please email a single PDF file to and containing:

  1. A cover letter
  2. A resume/CV, including a list of publications
  3. A brief description of research interests and experience (no more than 3 pages).

Please arrange for 3 confidential letters of recommendation to be sent to the same addresses before the closing date.
