Title: Views on Ageing in older couples and among family carers of people with dementia
Abstract: Views on ageing capture the ideas, beliefs, expectations, and experiences that people have about older age in general (general views on ageing) and their own ageing (personal views on ageing). Whereas people with negative views on ageing tend to focus on age-related limitations and health issues, people with positive views on ageing generally aim to make the most of ageing-related benefits such as having greater freedom and knowledge. Views on ageing are important predictors of health and wellbeing in a way that those people who are more positive about ageing maintain between physical and mental health, cognitive functioning, quality of life, and even live longer. Most research on views on ageing has focused on the general population. In my talk I will present two projects investigating views on ageing in specific samples. The first project consists in a UK survey aiming to compare the views on aging of family carers of people with dementia with those of non-carers and to identify correlates of views on ageing among carers. The second project is a multimethod study aiming to investigate whether and how older couples/spouses have similar views on ageing.
