Initiatives and Programmes

A variety of initiatives and programmes are available to members of the department to support and encourage gender equality at all levels in Psychology:

Careers development:

sprintThe University Careers and Skills department regularly runs the SPRINT programme for female undergraduate students. Over four days, the programme supports students’ personal, career and skills development. Our students have found it really helpful:

"Sprint was essential in me springing back to a motivated me. Sprint made me realise that I am human and that no one is motivated all the time and it helped me set SMART goals which was essential," Deanne Hay, 2nd year Psychology undergraduate.

"I've been able to strengthen both my approach in and outlook towards my personal, professional and academic-work life. I cannot recommend it enough!" Debbie Ayoade, 2nd year Psychology undergraduate.

URSS scheme

Several of our Undergraduates have successfully taken part in the Undergraduate Research Support Scheme (URSS). (3 female, 1 male) 2017-2019.

Network!

ASPoN Forum (The Athena SWAN Psychology National Forum)

The ASPoN Forum is a national network for British Psychology departments who are engaged with the Athena Swan Charter and committed to to advancing the careers of women. It was launched on Monday 15th February 2016 at the 1st Athena SWAN Workshop for Psychology being held in Egham, London. Michaela Gummerum attended the 4th meeting at UCL on Thursday 7 November 2020.

There are a number of opportunities locally that promote and support women academics and equality in the work place. In the spirit of promoting true equality, these events are open to and welcome all members of staff, not just women.

WIS

Members of staff, male and female, are welcome and indeed encouraged to join the Warwick Women in Science network which provides information and opportunities to interact with others at regular networking events to support women in science. Recent meetings have explored issuses such as unconscious bias, imposter syndrome and gender equality from the male perspective. Follow them on Twitter: @WarwickWIS or attend one of their meetings to join in the conversation!

Science GrrlScience Grrl is a national group that celebrates women in science and promotes science careers to the next generation through its activities. Follow them on Twitter: @science_grrl or read their recent report on female representation in STEM careers, or get involved! There is a Coventry and Warwickshire chapter of the Science Grrl group which organizes local activities, see their Facebook page for more details.

The Senior Academic Women’s network runs sessions on issues, such as the recent Work-Life balance session, relevant to female professionals.

Be inspired!

Students and staff are all invited to attend the University’s Inspiring Women series of talks: senior professional women from varied backgrounds talk about their success and give advice and, hopefully, inspiration to others.
